Illinois horse slaughter ??? (this ought to cause a stir)

Saw an article yesterday they were trying to pass legislation to reopen it.

Also Missouri sent................somekinda legal deal.....trying to get incentives passed for one to reopen somewhere.

Bout time. 2 years and finally somebody starts to wake up.

I always wondered why they never opened one on an Indian Reservation. Lots of Federal laws dont apply there.

As a lifelong horse enthusiast, I used to be extremely opposed to horse slaughter. However, I changed my opinion after hearing the views of some of my agriculture and animal science professors at Clemson. The way I see it, as long as the actual process remains humane (and it should, if plants are monitored by the USDA as I imagine they would be here in the US) slaughter is a better alternative than the fate many old or unwanted horses would meet. I'd much rather see these animals humanely rendered than mistreated by owners that no longer want them, or suffering inside a packing plant outside our country. Just my opinion, but I think a lot of true horsemen and women feel the same.

I through the US outlawed horse slaughter that is why a lot of people are taking them to canada .Around here people are setting horses off beside the road like stray dogs and cats I wish someone would open up a slaughter house. maybe then they would be worth something .

Yeah, I hate to see an old horse way past its prime looking arthritic and hips all poking out. Ditto to what was said about them being abandoned, even worse the ones who keep them but can't afford to pay to keep them well. About all they can do is take them to the back forty and hope the first bullet does the job. That's one task most horse lovers are not up for ethically or internally.

There's a local horse auction in our area that has a horse sell every Tuesday night. Mostly you can walk through and out of every 100 horses, probably 1/2 should be put down.

We haven't regularly attended in a few years, but when we did there was a man who came in at least once a month and bought up many horses, as many as his rig could hold often more and he would make another trip. He bought them really cheap (under $200 each) and re-sold them to a man who bought for glue factory's and dog food processors.

I also used to be very opposed to this, and still do not believe I could ever knowingly sell one to slaughter. However, after seeing neighbors leave their horses to starve in the field and not even bury them or dispose of the bodies, seeing them being turned loose to run through others property because the owners can't afford to feed them, and going to the vet to see a load of healthy horses sent to auction off because the owners didn't come back for them... I can see the need for this.

At least this way they can be used for something productive. Now wish they could find a practical use for all the animals killed in shelters. Our local shelter's last report showed an average of 576 animals brought in every week, less than 30 on average adopted each week, with the remaining balance (around 540 WEEKLY) euthanized. They only deal with cats and dogs.

I grew up around horses, cowboyed and broke horses for years as a young man in Oklahoma. I've got four head right now.

And I absolutely think they ought to open up another slaughter operation or two.

There has to be a place to go for horses that are either unuseable because of their disposition, o else past their prime physically.

People are taking them out in the country and turning them loose rather than feeding them now. That is a shame, and worse than slaughtering them.

What is worse??

Opening up horse slaughter across the US where some of the meat can be utilized by those in need of nutrition. It may be across the pond where the meat ends up, who knows. I am sure that lots would be utilized in the US.

Second option, Let the horses get old, there teeth get bad, wormy and they starve to death. They get hauled to the back forty and become coyote food.

This doesn't include the monetary value that horse slaughter adds back into the horse industry. Today it cost to put the horse down and additional cost of disposal.

2 things bugged me when they closed the plants and started the federal ban.

1) it sets a dangerous president for farm animals in general. The excuse was we dont eat them, so we shouldnt kill them to be eatin. That can be said of lots of different animals. I dont eat goat, sheep, goose, duck, or cows past a 2year old prime steer. That doesnt mean somebody somewhere doesnt, and more power to them. Then there are the exotics raised all over this country, some for the specific reason of slaughter.

2) It was done against the advice of the federal governments own experts on the subject, the USDA.

Most of the USDA's predictions have came to pass, and now 2 years later people are starting to wake up.
