bit clean off...

my walker female bit one of our other dogs, it happened in a blink of the eye but she ripped a piece of the pups ear clean off... its about the size of my pinky if not bigger, going down the side of his ear... so he is missing a nice chunk. it looks like she hit one of the main veins so it was pouring blood for quite a while and i did everything in my knowledge to do with it. i called the emergency vet and she was very rude to me telling me its not her problem and she can't do anything about it while i still have the other piece of his ear i thought it could be sewed back on... anyways i taped it up and its been taped since monday night.

How long will it take for this to heal so it will quit pouring blood when he shakes his head? and also is it better to keep it taped up or to let the air get to it and just let it bleed a bit? he seemed like he was going into shock after a little while but he's doing better. I've never seen so much blood! i used emt gel and stuff but it did nothing at all...

Any input will help i really wanted to start working on him more he's only 8 months old.

Thank you

find another vet.

we had a similar thing happen in the woods. Our vet sewed the edge of the ear shut. no more bleeding, and it healed totally within a couple of weeks.

take the duct tape off his ear and let it get some air. it won't heal the way it is now.
plus he looks so **** silly, even if he bleeds to death let him die with dignity instead of having his ear wrapped up like an idiot.
he'll live, might hurt his fancy show dog career though.

superglue

doesnt work, or at least it didnt for me...I had a young hound tangle with a coon a few years ago that got about 1/4 of his ear torn off...superglue didnt do anything to stop that kind of bleeding...when an ear gets ripped, it FLOWS blood, nothing is gonna stop it, your best bet is to get a towel and keep on it until it slows down and starts to clot a little, and you can either then tape it up for about 24-36 hours, or you can use plain old flour, flour works great...now that is for a freshly torn ear.....

You can try a million of these things but in the mean time you should find a reasonable vet that understands that you have hunting dogs and is willing to work with you on any further adventures you might run into. My old redbone got chewed on by a coon he caught on the ground and had an ear torn pretty good. I cleaned it and super glued it ,but everytime he shook his head it started bleeding again.I cleaned it again and realized that it had 2 broken blood vessels. Took him to the vet and got it cleaned and stitched for $ 160 (MONEY WELL SPENT). Certain vets around me are worse than PETA .

Product called wonderdust works for me,you can get at most farm supply stores.Vet wrap is better than duct tape and is easy to put on and take off.I would definitely find a new vet."deamon"

I would take the pup to another vet. Superglue will not stick to a wet surface such as blood or water. If you decide to use it, pinch the vein to stop bleeding, clean thoroughly, dry thoroughly, and then glue. Why did the walker dog bite the pup? Is she usually agressive?

I had a dog a few years back that had an ear injury hunting. I noticed it when I loaded him up to come home from hunting one night. I don't know how it happened but there was a long and thick piece of skin peeled back.

I cleaned him up and tried to stop the bleeding as best I could but I could never stop the bleeding. The next morning I decided he had to go to the vet. The vet told me then that I could have glued it back with super glue and it would have been fine had I done it when it first happened.

As it was, he had to sew it back and I had to keep the dog's ears taped up to keep him for reopening the wound by shaking his head. It took a long time for this to heal and several visits to the vet.

I questioned him about using super glue as to it being toxic or was it just regular old super glue. He said yes he was talking about the reg old super glue and no it would not hurt to use it.

I always have super glue around house but never had it with me hunting. I started taking it along with other first aid stuff after then but never again had a need for it.

I think surgeons use a version of it on people in some cases...so yes it does work.

We also used super glue on my brothers Rottie once...My nephew, only 4 at the time, had gotten a hold of a pair of sissors and was going to give Duke a hair cut..He cut into the dogs ear!!!My sister-in-law called me to come help...We got over there and it looked like someone had been murdered in thier house !! It was a horrible site from all the blood. She and Cody were covered ! From first site you would have thought he had cut the ear plum off because of all the blood. But it was just about 1/2 inch clean cut. We pinched it enough to stop the bleeding and applied super glue..It did take a couple of tries to actually get a good bond. But, it did work. Duke didn't even have a scar.

Doesn't sound like super glue is your answer now...But, keep it in mind for next time...

How is the pup doing now?

Brogy, your never gonna give up trying to get josh to get rid of that show dog lol but the dog won't be used for show only he'll be in the woods, just trying to put a title on him since he's just a pup.

jking, they run loose in the fenced yard and there was something on the ground i thought my female caught something cause they were all barking. i was yelling at her out the window cause i thought her and my bluetick were gonna get into it but the pup walked by a chomp off comes the ear. turns out it was a bone. the female used to be a bit aggressive when she was a pup, she jacks the tree a lot but i've worked on it and she isn't aggresive anymore but won't take no crap neither.

s/s, the pup doesn't live at my house i just have him at my house on weekends to work with him and take him to events and hunt but josh said he's doing okay.

Thanks everyone for your input

i don't care about the **** shows. i enter them cause i'm a kid and have fun with it. I taped it up to stop the bleeding so he could ride home in Josh's jeep and not get blood all over. I am not stopping him from taking the tape off. I don't treat my dogs like poodles i know they are hounds and all of them are hunted cause they are hounds, obviously cause my dog got killed hunting.... sorry i don't have the best dog around i'm just a kid trying to have fun
