"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right – a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people, that can, may revolutionize, and make their own of so much of the territory as they inhabit." – Abraham Lincoln, (speech in Congress January 1848)
Read that quote by ol Abe. He made this speech when it was the NORTHERN states threatening to leave the Union because they didn't agree with the prospect of war with Mexico (they feared the added territory would come in and be made into more southern states and tilt the balance of power south), and he was laying out their argument that they were within their rights to do so....funny how he forgot those principles when it was the other section of the country wanting out a few years later...Just like any friggin' politician. He supported whatever stance favored him the most in the moment....
