in my area it had ben in the high 90s and lower 100s for almost 2 months and no rain for 2 months i dont think any things going to look to good in that. but i havent had had my old dog out in this dust yet i my try her next time i go shes fat as a butter ball from being layd up since early spring it may takea few nights to tell how she can do

When the tracking gets tough is the best time to evaluate where your dog stands, and where it needs improvement!!! These types of situations are where the top dogs shine, and the mediocre dogs fail!!!

We're still treeing what we strike. I've seen a lot worse conditions than this!!!

All we have to do is put a dust mask on our hounds and they'er good to go.lol it's real dry here, no rain about two months.

I've never seen a hound do great in extremly dry condition's. Dont care how good a track dog they are. Thier going to struggle to get tree'd. If they do. Try hunting dry, dusty with some wind, be lucky if you tree, let alone run a good track and finish it.

I'm in North Alabama and have never seen conditions close to what we have had in all of my 45 years. It is definately tough on dogs, regardless of how good they are.

It's just as " HOT and DRY " here in WEST VIRGINIA as it is in KENTUCKY !!! Last saturday night at a competition hunt in Clay County, WV, a total of 5 tracks for a score of 525 + , 0 - , 425 circle, verifiable from judge and guide Brian Collins, aka "Hilltop" on here, or through UKC and the Clay County Coon Club. If your dog has a good cold nose and has a brain behind it to use it, it doesn't matter how hot, dry, windy, rainy, cold, snowy just inclement weather in general ; maybe this is why people need to breed all grand dogs that win in competition!!!

YOU GOT A COON DOG HUNT HIM HE WILL TREE JUST AS MANEY,one thing for sure you cant train them if you dont turm loose,,,been treeing plenty coon,,a coon dog is a coon dog in aneyweather,,,long as they sture and they been moving,,,it is a good time to see if you got a coon dog in heat and dust and so on and if he is a coon dog this weather will not stop him from treeing coon,,david boggs

I want to see some of these people making the same claims come February, with single-digit temperatures.

It's quite obvious that some have no clue about what tough tracking is, or what COONDOGS are!!!

to all
i have been treeing coons .just asked if any one was having track trouble ect. like runing slower than normal. taping trees.realy working the track hard . i never said my dog couldent tree a coon in this dust he is just working alot harder to do it

Its always dry and dusty here in Kansas, the weed pollen this time of year really messes with a hound. I am like you always still tree coons but not with the same ease. Just hard running right now. It wil get better when you get rain and cooler weather. Its coming,, Highs today in Ks is 62 with rain

Boys, in the hills these boys are from, a lot dogs that are considered coon dogs can't tree a coon in those hills. Trust me (I've brought a couple of nice dogs down for people) who have show me there not as good in the thin dust coon than heavy populated. Yeah, you can still tree coons right now, but sometimes you may half to camp out doing it or go to few slick trees. A Coon dog is a coon dog, but they are few far and in between. If you are a poor hillbilly like myself, you half to settle for a few counterfits. lol Tim Bolden

Sept 18:
Took Grit out tonight by his self, on the DRY ground up here, 2.75 inches of rain since April,15. First dump was on a hay field next to a pasture. He went in about 250 yrds and barked once, and shut up. I heard him about 30 secs later another 100 or so yrds in. He went in the 1 o'clock direction, S.E. about another 100 yrds and barked twice. Silence for about a min, then a locate. Walked in to him and he had a big black coon on a limb over the creek. Hooked him up and went to the truck.
Second dump: Turned him loose in the woods, by the time I got the lead over my shoulder he located and treed about 50 yrds from the back of the truck. Walked in and he had a coon trying to climb out the top of a tree about as big around as a softball. Hooked him up and went to the truck.
Dump three: Tuned across a worked field about 100 yrds wide to the woods. He cut in the woods to the left, South, barked about 6 times and shut up. He was quiet about 2 mins when I heard him next he was about 200yrds in to the west locating. Walked to him and seen the coon on the way in. Walked him out to the north along a corn field and cut him again. He opened in the corn and circled around to the north. He went quiet and I wondered where he was going to open next, there is a road across the field to the north. The next time he barked was to the south in the woods,whew, lol. Opened 4-5 times and came treed. Walked in and seen ole ricky looking down. Hooked him up and walked to the truck.
Next dump: Cut him to the south between a woods and a cornfield. He went down about 100yrds and opened. He carried the track into the woods to the west and started to work it back to the north towards me. He got treed about 50 yrds off the back of the truck again. I walked down the trail into him and seen 2 eyes looking down. I then walked him back to the field and cut him south again. He went to the end of the field and barked once, located and treed. I see the coon on the edge of the field as I was walking to him. Hooked him up and called it a night. 6 drops, 6 coon and home by 11:00. I used 1 hour and 10 mins of hunt time. Why couldn't this been a hunt night? Lol.

i was able to make that many drops in two nights, no way i could do it in a night. too rough and not enough coon. i love hunting northern michigan. i think we hunted in tennis shoes last time we was up there. great hunting and beautiful woods. i kind of wish i live up there if not for the bad winters. tim
