Dog Houses!! Let's get serious about this!!

I'm sure most on this board knows of me and knows I have certain opinions on my hounds or certain things!! I have hunted for near 40 years and it still to this day drives me crazy the way some hounds are housed when it comes to thier sleeping quarters and where the hound or pup has to sleep!! When we are tired we choose a place where we can lie down and rest are sorry behinds. Get up in the morning and start all over again. Day and night same thing over and over!! We all enjoy are hounds I'm sure, but the way some are kept till this day drives me crazy. If we own hounds, we should all keep thier living quarters and where they sleep very apealing to our eyes or anyone that comes to your place, but better yet your hounds should enjoy being there. They don't have a choice, we as owners have to do that for them. I am one who goes out of his way to make my hounds or hounds that are brought over to breed and stay awhile like they are welcome and when I pull in the driveway they are happy to see me. I just think if we own them, take care of them the best way you can!! If you can't take your time to do that than please get them to somebody who can. The hound will love ya for it!! They have feelings like you!! Later, Danny G.

"YEP"

Now there's something I will totally agree with you on Danny!! It make's me sick to see them tied to old building's they have to tunnel under, car hood's & what ever else. I have seen it all I think when it come's to neglected housing.

Then there are the one's with so much algae in their water they have to chew it to pasify their thirst & it's warmer than bath water.

Like you I beleive if'n ya can't do rite by them then let someone else have'um or what ever. They are living thing's that depend on us as their feed, water & care provider's.

Wonder how some of them people would like gettin fresh water just here & there & sleepin on dirt ?

Two Toes

I am pround of most of the hounds I have owned in the last 40 years, but most important is I'm proud of myself for taking care of them. Good sleeping quarters has to be first in line. Tied on a chain is fine with me as long as the area is kept clean, but they still need a quality place to rest and sleep. Just like us!! I know I for one am going to start to get pups into peoples hands that can really appreciate having them and taking care of them. I would be embaressed to have anyone show up at my kennel and not have things clean and tidy. House to sleep in, clean water 2 times a day, food enough to keep them fit and healthy along with companionship, shots and wormed. Not hard at all!! Thanks, Danny G.

Well let me say something!!

A well built doghouse thats insulated right will keep your hound in it even in hot weather and before you say I'm Crazy let me tell ya why. At 95 degrees on a hot Ohio day I did a test for myself and here is what I found out. I took a well insulated doghouse and set it on a blacktop driveway that afternoon. It got down to 68 degrees that night. At 5 o'clock in the afternoon the next day it was 94 degrees but that doghouse sitting on a black top driveway from the day before in the direct sun on the inside was still only 76 degrees at 4 o'clock. This is a fact!! Also did test at 5 below zero and the house still did it's job!! I just went outside and took 2 pics!! 93 degrees and look, hounds are in houses. second pic hound comes out!! Thanks , Danny g.

i have to agree with you on the insulated dog houses. we have some of those big igloos that are heavy and insulated. the dogs love them when its hot. my dad designed and built our other doghouses. the walls are double sided leaving space to put in insulation between them. they are on short legs to keep them off the ground with the same construction on the floor. then a sloping roof. all put together with screws so you can remove the outer wall if you need to. also easier to just take apart if you want to move them. the sides and floor are constructed so they come apart as one unit when you want to move it.
now patches and shi live in the house. i think i would be forced to sleep in the doghouse before either one of them would. heck! i have to ask permission just to have a spot on the sofa. lol
crossblues, i have the same problem you have. the dogs in the kennel chew up anything i put in for them to lay on. i am considering getting some carpet remnants and scewing them down on the floor.

This is a really good post. I agree with everything. I even wash all the dog food pans in the dishwasher twice a day. People say our dogs are spoiled, but their just taken care of. That's the way it should be!! I love the dogs (especially the blue ones).

Danny, I agree with you 100%. If a person is not going to take good care of their dog they have no business with one. unfortunately a dog is at the mercy of the owner as to whether or not he will take good care of him. If you can't house them properly or feed them good don't own one!

Insulated dog house are worth their weight in gold...and anyone who doesn't beleive it is a moron!

I have K9-Kondo Dog Den 2's in each kennel. Yeah, you pay almost $200 for them upfront...but here's what you get with them. The dogs stay healthier, alot warmer in the winter, alot cooler in the summer, and alot drier all year long. Your bedding stays dry..so it lasts allot longer...that means $ saved in bedding material like straw or shavings. When it's cold, your dogs eat less..allot less becuase their house keeps them warm. Less feed equals a large savings, and that equals money saved. Between these two things, feed savings first, bedding savings second, the houses pay for themselves after 2 years. After that, it's money in your pocket. Why wouldn't someone try them? Cuz their stubborn, dumb, or both. Your dogs deserve it..and you deserve a savings. People I've told report the same findings as me. Dont believe me?? Just try one and see. Most popular arguement is "I dont have the money". Well, you've been throwing money away all this time. It's time to start saving money aint it? I've wrote these similiar words many times on this forum...and I'll say it until I'm dead. If you can tie your shoes, you're smart enough to realize the savings and go out and buy a few K9-Kondos. No, I dont work for the company..dont own stock, I dont get anything from them. I'm just a happy customer that cant figure out why people throw money out the window every day in feed and bedding, well being and pride of ownership. Try one...if you dont like it then heck I'll buy it back from ya!! lol

I have one of Danny's boxes. They are the best for what Ive seen. Take them apart scub them and disinfect. Really light weight too.

Danny I see you have I think a tarp over your pen, what size is it and where did you get it?

Don't let the cost scare you on his boxes. Guaranteed all around! Last a life time!

Don't want UKC to DELETE!! I am sure we have all tried to slepp in a truck at one time or another at a hunt and you notice I said TRY!!. Heck, it ain't like sleepin with Moma, thats for sure!! Just doesn't feel to good!! How do you think some hounds are doing with thier sleeping quarters! Kinda makes you thinks some doesn't it!! Thanks, Danny G.

I'm with you on this one. I clean my kennels and change water twice a day. I also purchased K-9 Kondo's along with mjflores. I have had them all, wooden doghouses, barrels, you name it. By far the insulated, non-chewable doghouses are the best. Yes you put more money up front but man are they worth it in the long run. I drove down south to pick a pup up one time and saw a dog living under a old satelite dish. Went down to WV with a buddy one time and saw 10+ blueticks tied out in the middle of winter. Nothing but empty barrels filled with ice inside of them. Imagine being one of them dogs! I know a man from this area that believes "winter kill" is a normal thing, makes me sick to my stomach. I'd say, "if you don't have what it takes to take care of them the right way, you might want to rethink what you are doing." Take care of whatcha got it'll pay off in the end! jmo-wd.
