youngest ukc grand nite ch.

this was brought up on another thread, and it got my curiosity,so i did a little brainpicking about a dog that i had believed to be the youngest gr nt ever.

Grand Nite Champion Bellars Indiana Shep. ukc#H505-669
D.O.B 10-20-1974
GN degree achieved-9-12-1975

that made him grand nite at 10 mnths 23 days.
those of you that are old enough to have hunted in the hunts back in those days here in the midwest will remember ol shep .

i am told that ukc records dont go back that far,so what i am going on is the degree from ukc that the owner still has on record.
he still remembers a lot of the hounds and handlers he drew and how many dogs were in attendance on his way to finish shep out.

if anyone knows of a younger one, please post and let us know.

Hey Elvis, Was Sheps' Grand Nite degree honorary or earned under the current structure? I remember reading that the GRNT degree was given as a honorary degree until sometime in the 70's. It wasn't placed on a hound after 5 NTCH wins like it is today, I think it maybe 3 was all that was required(I may be wrong).

In any case, 10 months and 23 days is very young to be in a hunt, let alone be a Grand nite!

Whats even more amazing to me is the owner is still with the same line, not many that stay the path for that long. I don't beleive that I've ever hunted with a hound outa that line that couldn't tree a coon, not saying I've hunted with alot of them but maybe 12-15 over time.

It seems like

It seems like I can remember when I started hunting, that it might have only taken three wins to Gr. but ,......hell half the time I can't remember what day it is.

I never have went to alot of hunts but Russ Bellars was there when I started 25 years ago and is still there now.

Thanks for the info Elvis, enjoyed seeing that!!

I may be wrong but, don't they advertise Stylish Coma as producing the world's youngest Grand Nite.

I thought I read that somewhere.

Here it is.....

quote:
As far as early starting pups, Stylish Coma has produced the two youngest Gr.Nites ever, starting with the late Gr.Nt.CH., Gold Ch. Lookin UP Jeb, at 12 months 6 days old, and later proceeded by Wiseman's Wild Co-Cain at 11 months 23 days old.

That is a quote I took straight from Chad Medlock's advertisment on the PKC site. Here is a link to the post.

bellar says he dont remember having to only get 3 wins.says if he only needed 3 they didnt tell him.
he also pointed out that back then they didnt give more than 1 nt ch win no matter how many nt ch's were entered in the hunt.he remembers 1 little local ukc hunt he and shep went to try to pick up a win and 43 nt ch's were entered.he still remembers who he drew.

youngest champs

Yall have really done your home work and I reckon I learned alot from reading your posts. Its nice to know history of that sort, and I hope its true what they say about history repeating itself. Maybe there will be a few more like that. I love a young starting dog. Thanks for the info

Elvis, back then a hunt drew some dogs! A local hunt would draw as many dogs as a Mid-Major hunt of today. I'd like to have gotten the chance to hunt with some of the dogs Bellar has raised. Shep, Striker, and Pac Man are three that pop to my mind.

Honorary Degrees

To make Gr. Nite Ch. it always took 5 Nite Ch. hunt wins. To make Gr. Show Ch., it used to take 3 wins against all Champions (male and female).

It used to be that when you granded a dog (hunt or show), UKC issued a Grand Champion certificate only. On the registration papers and pedigrees, UKC did not put the Grand title on. This may be why some mentioned the honorary title. Honorary is a poor choice of words. It had to be earned. I think it was around 1974 when UKC started to actually put Gr. Ch. degrees on the papers.

The hunts back then were a lot bigger than today. There weren't many Nite Ch.'s, let alone Gr. Nite Ch.'s. The hunts were 3 hours instead of 2 hours. First tree was 100, not 125. There were fewer hunts, and they were farther apart. Non-hunting judges was a requirement for Nite Ch. and Gr. Nite Ch. casts. Some of the stronger clubs had non-hunting judges for all casts (registered included).

Pac Man Stock

My brother owned a grandson of him that started treeing coon at 6 months old in the hills of Kentucky. This has nothing to do with making the youngest grand nite champion, but it does speak for this line of walkers. His name was Hardwood Luther, his sire was Bluegrass Luther, and his mother was out of Pac Man........WOW what a pressue tree dog at such an early age, and a dog that went hunting as soon as he was unsnapped, and would go until he got treed, and also a mouth that you could hear for two country miles.

I would like to make a correction to a statement made earlier here. UKC's records go back to 1898. We computerized in the 70s. All the data that was not computerized must to be compiled by hand. So, when someone asks us about the earlier history, we tell them that the records were not computerized then but we certainly do still have them.

I would like to know the answer myself. Several years ago, Archie Dore' had the front cover of the Cooner with what was supposed to have been the youngest GrNite ever. I think Weatherford bought him and sold him to Vogel. I can remember Jet II being advertised as the youngest GrNite ever at one time. Someone with some old magazines could look that up in an old T.E. Neely ad. I think he owned Jet II when he died.

Ritchie, Me and Jim Smith were the owners, Archie was handler. Scout was the Youngest Dual Grand Champion 14 months 12 days. Lipper held the Dual Grand record for years at 19 months and some odd days. To the best of my knowledge Scout still holds this record.
