photos from the PAST. 1968

I have been going through some old photos...I would like to share.

My family started hunting in 1903, my grandfather and his brothers would get coon and possum to feed the family. 10 or 11 brothers and sisters. They tell stories of hunting all night and maybe running 1 or 2 tracks all night. There wasn't many coon because everyone hunted for food and pelts.

This photo is of my grandpa, uncle, and my father. The kids on the barrell are my two cousins and me.

have a merry christmas,
chip

this photo was taken a little earlier. My father and grandfather had two black and tan hounds. Big Boy and lead were their names my father is around 13-14 years old so the year would have been 1947 or 1948. Big Boy was the hound the family talks about most.. silent on track but accurate. hope you enjoy the photos of the past.. over 100 years of coonhunting and still going strong..lol

Look how the hides were skinned during this era....
It is neat to see how things have changed over the years. The year of this photo is around 1954, my family had moved from Mackey to Woodward. Big Boy is the hound on the left. He is approx. 8-9 years old.

good huntin,
chip

Those photos are priceless! Really cool to see. That Bluetick in the first photo looks like a bigun! Funny...if you open skinned hides like that and tried to sell them these days, I bet you'd have to settle on a buck a piece if that lol. Times sure do change. Are there any notes on the back of the photos like dog names, hide prices, etc?

my grandpa sold his hides at Indianola Ia, we have the invoices showing that pelts brought 35-50 cents depending on grade.

The funny thing is that he also sold frozen coon meat to smittys sausage company, New York. The meat was shipped via rail and we have documentation that shows the price at 3 cents per pound.

The bluetick belonged to my Uncle Jerry, Drum lived to be 14 and passed away at his house.

thanks for the PM.....I replied

I would say that either dog would be a good choice.. The x dog was a very early starting hound, and has a great personality, very accurate... give Tony a call or better yet come up to Iowa for a hunt.

thanks
chip

ok, I am having fun now... this is our old hound tennessee.
This is the hound I grew up with. My dad bought him from charlie smith in the late 60's or early 70's . This picture was taken in the fall of 79, I was 15 and hunting him regularly. From the pictures he looked a lot like ol BIG BOY. ( I think I have found the name of my next male dog. lol)
I have found pictures from the 40's, 50's, 60's,and now the 70's.I hope you enjoy them 1/2 has much as I do.

Last picture for today.. My son Raymond and me at our friends house. We were thawing out hides to sell......(around 1995)

old family traditions are hard to die..... I have enjoyed hunting over the years, and will cherish all the friends I have made....

I look forward to making more in the years to come...
Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to all...

Nights like Wednesday make me realize what I like about our sport, hobby, or business whatever your case may be.

I enjoyed the clean fresh Iowa air, listened to a honest hound work a good track , finish it right, have the meat ( times 2), and enjoyed the company of a good friend.

Nights like that are why my family has been coonhunting for over 100 years.

Thanks for the memories Tony, I enjoyed every step of it. And I am sure ole Anny loved it too.

Hey Chip, those are awesome pics!

Here is one I always post on the "old photo" threads. This is my Grandfather in the middle and two neighbors in '46 or '47 after getting home from WWII and occupying duty in Japan. The hounds are all mixed bred grade dogs, but it looked like they got the job done that trip LOL. That is a heckuva night here in western NC today, much less back then!

PW,

Nice pictures, I just love looking at these old pictures and wondering what kind of tree dog they were, or better yet what kind of nose they had.... Thanks for the pictures.
