Tree dogs for the most parts. I'd say he threw every kind imaginable. Never be another like him in our life time I dont think. Number 1 reproducer with pups winning around 2 million in pkc and still climbing and hes been dead for years.

My experience with a hound direct from Rat and a Dual Grand Harry female. The Good:Awesome competition dog,Accurate on thick coon, hard hunter, good lookin blocky hound, handled very nice and smart. The Bad:Chop all the way,Couldnt run a cold track worth a crap and he would start loosing his mouth if hunted more than 3 days in a Row.I really liked my Rat dog,he was hard to beat in thick coon but when tracks came tough he struggled.

I have hunted with 3 directly off rattack and several grand pups they never had any trouble running tracks or having coon when they did tree!!! I can show u a grand pup that can drive a track and put ricky at the end of it!! He is the total opposite of what u are describing,

I live 20 minutes from Kevin Turner and Buzz Lynch and this is exactly my opinion of Rat dogs. There WERE a bunch of them right here around me. Notice I said WERE. Folks around here are goin to either Wipeout or Harry Bawls or even Skuna River Bart. Ive seen one out of the 100 Ive hunted with that was pretty nice and that was Elmer Jenkins bitch called Pat Attack. 1 out of 100 and good odds,

So Gfults. How did they win that 2 million? The reason folks are going to others is because rat is dead lol. Wipeout was here way before rat and so was the harry breeding. What its took folks all these yrs to figure this out?

Hitting alot of hunts in the summer along with some good handling! Thats how. Not all of them, but Id say the majority of them around here anyway and in my area it seemed like everybody was huntin a Rat dog, so I got to see a bunch of them on a regular basis. There are some exceptions but not many that Ive seen. I got a buddy that I hunt with 4-5 nights a week that had almost $20,000(almost a PCH) won when he died. I promise you in the winter when trees were easy to shine he might tree 1 coon to every 10 trees he made. Hes not the only one that way neither, just used him as an example. I like Kevin Turner and Buzz Lynch as well as anybody I know but the original thread post said they wanted some opinions on Rat. I always hesitate before I post on a thread like this because it never fails that when a negative opinion is posted somebody gets mad and trys to attack that person. The thread didnt ask to be told about the good things only. Its just my opinion and you have yours and neither of us is wrong, we just have different opinions. I respect your opinion so please try to respect mine. Thanks

Just out of curiosity. Why would a man in his right mind ever even breed to a. Tree happy dog. To better a breed u have to breed better dogs. I mean did nobody hunt with the dog before they bread to him or wat

You also breed to put the tree instinct in pups from females that are good trail dogs, to hopefully get great balance. That was the way the dogs were bred before all the titles became the rage !
People always talk about dogs being "tree happy", could it be that what they are seeing are dogs that "wind" coons without needing a trail to run first ? Being around dogs that can run tracks as they come to them, or tree them when there are no trails to run, could that be why Rat Attack produced so many winners ? After all a coon needs to be seen to win the hunts in UKC !

Being tree happy and not being able to run a track are 2 totally different things. I use to hunt regularly with 5 different dogs off Rat. They were owned by friends of mine that I hunted with nightly. Ive seen every one of them on many occasions where they would grab a tree and stick it that another dog had just located. The one I hunted with the most was probably the 2nd best of those 5 dogs and he would have maybe 1 coon to every 10 trees he made in winter or summer, leaves or not. We were standing alongside a ditch one night and the 3 dogs we had came down the ditch by us. They werent struck yet. A english female was in the ditch and the other 2 was coming down the bank, a black pup and the Rat dog. The eng female was trying to come up the steep ditch bank and she took her head and hooked a small tree to help pull herself up the bank. The rat dog was about 10 feet from her and when she did that with her head, that dog grabbed that tree and blew the top out. Im sure there were some pretty decent dogs out of Rat, but ive hunted with bunches of them and I havent seen but 1 that Id have and I wouldnt have had her until she got to be about 5 years old.

When the owner of any dog looks at you and tells you that his dog couldnt tree a coon if you dropped the dog in a 55 gallon drum with one in the drum(and I quote), that kinda tells me sumthin. If some of you guys have had or do have good Rat dogs, then they deserve their credit. Im not wantin to take anything away from the deserving few, but dont try to convince me that what Ive seen with my own eyes was just an illusion! Youve seen what youve seen and so have I!

I was out of the hound world for quite a few years till last year. When I did hunt a few years ago I had a friend who bought this pup straight out of a world champ hound( no names here)Its not important. We raised this pup like a kid thought the world of him,had high hopes for him,This dog turned out absolutly useless he made to 2.5 yrs old.had a little gyp the same age out of a local barn dog (no chamion bloods in her) this man bred for himself and maybe a few friends. His hounds would run and tree by 9 months and do it with style at 1 to 1.5 yrs old.It is not in all dogs to be great some don't have it not the studs fault not the dames fault it just wasn't there. A GOOD HANDLER HELPS ALSO TO WIN MONEY AND TITLES

Chalk 45 more dollars up to rat off spring from the other night. 225+ what?! wait plus????? what the heck. Heck if he was still alive. I'd buy one from him and Tramp Best reproducer the coonhound world will ever know. I will say one thing. I dont see in the world one made PCH by having 1 in 10 coons.. He was a cull and evidently every thing he hunted against.

He was hunted against the best night in and night out. Winning cast in my area night in and night out at PKC hunts is not an easy thing to do.
