that is why i thought Steve owned him because of the trophy's and the big picture when he made hall of fame and according to some of the older members River Bend was a horseshoe in the Dan River was where the name River Bend came from.

I do know that when River Bend Flag was inducted into the Treeing Walker Breeders and Fanciers Hall of Fame back in 1988. Kent Spencer received a plaque and Steve Smith received a plaque and both men went up together to recieve their plaques. So I would assume the Steve Smith had something to do with Flag. Just my Opinion. Alan Kalal

i would suggest you check with UKC and see how many different people owned him. i think in his life he had three different owners in his life. the papers at the time you are looking at don't tell you who owned from 1 yr on thru death. UkcC could look it up for you and tell you how many times he was registered and under whose name

Thanks, that would be nice but from my research today it looks as if he had three owners. i knew Steve fit in somewhere because he was so proud of his picture and plaque that he said he once owned him if my memory serves right. and i think a Read had ownership at one time.

Thats also true. I have hunted flag bred hounds since I started and plan on owning a few more. Buried a male here several years back that had more flag in him than flag him self. LOL Pic of him below. does he look Flag bred.

Yeah the Flag dogs are my favorite and your old male sure does llok like a ole Flag bred hound. How exactly was he bred? My buddy has some semen off of River Bend Shot (River Bend Flag x Polstons Sue) that he is gonna hopefully get bred within the next 2-3 months.

He was off the Nt.Ch. Oak Hill Red Eagle Drive hound you have on your website and his mother had some Flag breeding also I think. If I remember correctly on his 7 gen. shows Flag around 8 times.

thanks Hickory Nut. i knew that Steve told me that he owned Flag and that was the reason for his Picture so i think Bloodline needs to rewrite the article with a little more research and give credit where due. probably both guys. i know Steve hunted and promoted him too.

Your welcome Dogwood. I have found two more ads on Flag and Steve Smith's name is in them all.

from all appearances, they were partners in River Bend. i know that later he was partners with another guy on another dog from N.C. who died of cancer. i beleive his first name was Allen and Steve had male litter mate that was his alone. both were fine hounds and the one from NC was a great reproducer

Smith's name may have been put on some adds but everyone knows Kent was the one to push Flag and the one who is responsible for starting the riverbend line

Steve Smith

I do not know who owned Flag, But I have known Steve for over 25 years, I can tell you this he played a big role in Flag's life.

So far ALL of the ads I have found on River Bend Flag has Steve Smith's name at the bottom of the ad. Including the one where he was removed from public stud for heartworm treatment and the one where he was offered back up for public stud after the treatment.

Another thing I noticed in all of the ads was the word WE. It was used often. "Flag will be treated for heart worms in June and should everything go well WE may again offer him at stud. Should WE again offer Flag at public sutd,"

I don't have a dog in this fight, but these are things I have observed and it does appear to me that they were in a partnership on Flag.

And by the way I have had many compliments on this article and its a funny thing that your the only one so far that has made a complaint. I reckon your just gonna be the odd-ball.

PS Your talking about given credit where it is due??? Who is the one who has been bragging and taking credit for all the hunts and wins that Flag had put on him???? Sure wasnt Kent, but Kent is the man that give him the wins.

Hey Droopy Dog,

I for one didn't take it as people trying to argue or even complaining. A person asked a simple question and it looks like folks were trying to answer his question and maybe get the facts correct.

It appears to me that you may be a little sensitive on this issue. No one is attacking you or your article yet.

Why would Steve Smith's name and address be at the bottom of all of River Bend Flags ads the same as Kent Spencer?

Why would all of the we's be in the ads like history nut pointed out?

Just a couple of questions that common sense would tell a person this is a certain way. When you wrote your article I assume you got a lot of information from Mr. Spencer?

Did you attempt to contact Mr. Smith about Flag? If not why?

Not sure if you can give 100% credit to either one of these men without the hunters hunting flags offspring..I know Kent and Steve and have hunted with both in pleasure or competition and both will give you their accounts if you open your ears and eyes!! I have crawled in wilson nc cutovers to help Kent get lonesome off of trees and Have drawn mahlon, shot, atkins hard rock and others quite a few times ..Did you realize that steve lived with Kent for quite a few years and he thought of steve as a son??JMO...I think both are responsible for this bloodline after flag was whelped and glad you fellows are keeping this bloodline alive...Hard rock was a direct son of flag and I have a daughter that is the sixth generation of these bloodlines that Ive owned and hunted...Watered down now I regret!!
