Garmin Frequency Change

Not many users of the Garmin Astro dog tracking system know that you can change frequency to gain signal rang. The Garmin operates on 5 different frequencies. These 5 frequencies are selectable in the Garmin 220 handheld unit.

The Garmin Asro DC30 and DC20 transmit a radio signal to the Garmin 220 handheld unit on 5,10,and 30 second intervals The range of that radio signal depends on the terrain where you are tracking.

Frequency: with the US version, their are 5 to work with

151,82 Mhz ( ID code:0-9)
151,88 Mhz ( ID code:10-19)
151,94 Mhz ( ID code:20-29)
154,57 Mhz ( ID code 30-39)
154,60 Mhz ( ID code 40-49)

How to switch frequencies:
Switching frequencies on the Garmin is very easy and its not published in the manual. To change it, you simply need to change the pre-programmed ID code that your Garmin is using For example, for better signal rang, you should try a ID code between 0 and 9 so the unit is set on the lowest frequency: 151,82 Mhz

To assign a new ID code to your unit

1- With the Garmin on and the DC30 on open "Dog Track" page press menu.

2-Select Change Comm Settings

3- Follow the on screen instructions

4-Select the desired ID code and press OK

5-Choose the update rate you desire.

6- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setup.

User Experience
A Garmin user that changed his frequency gained 2.4 miles just by changing his code that was preset on 48

The lowest frequency may not be the ultimate one and is recommended to try all 5 frequencies to see which one is preforming best for your location.

I have not done this to my Garmin. Mine already will track over 5 miles and i see no need to change it.

If you follow these instructions and change yours, I would write down my original code for reference

Make sure when you set down to make a change that the collar and handheld is close together.

And for the Same Reason that a 216 Tracking Collar is Stronger then a 217 !!! Their is nearly 1/2 mile Difference at 5 miles range using 216 over 217 .. We always Run the Lowest 216 we can.

I have one thats 216.000 then 216.012 ...

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

I've had mine going on two years, problem free. The problems with yours may be the user.
