I got 15 month old male dog tested positive for ehrlichia today. Got him on meds but vet says even if get him doin good it chance stress could cause it flare up again. Just wondering how everyone else's dealings with this disease went. Hard keep and push a young dog that might have issues from now on.

my buddys dog caught it last year yours needs to stay on meds she got very lazy which she was a very hard hunting dog would get a coon treed and just stop treeing
she has her moments but just keep pouring the meds to him with rest for awhile

I know of 2 dogs with it. Neither of them has ever come back to 100%. One of them is My male, he loved competition and loved to hunt. He still trees lots of coons, but with other dogs and in a cast he has lost some of his competitive drive. Stress or hard hunting does slow him down some. Winter months are much better for him. He has slowly come back, it will be a year in June when he was diagnosed with it. He has been on 4 rounds of Doxyclyline since then.
Its a nasty thing and I don't wish it on anyones dog.
The other dog is my buddies he never has come back out of it. He will look good for the first drop and then just quit most of the time.

I have heard people say that there dogs have come back with no problems, I sure hope mine gets there with some more time.

Both of mine got it ,ike got it 2 yrs ago and boy got it last summer. Neither has bn the same since . I have talked to many different vets and also a vet at a university . All of them have just about same opinion . Pills and rest but it will come back on them from time to time . So basically no good answers . I bought a 9 month flea and tick collar for my pup for 48.00 on chewy .com . I wish I had done this a few yrs ago .

A Buddy's dog had it just before the Winter Classic, She had been on meds for 1 week. She hunted dang good the first night I won the cast with 550+, the second night not so good. I could tell her Heart was in it but her body was not. She is better now BUT she is more moody and she started grawlling at other dogs. She never done that before. But I don't know if thats from the disease or because she has been bread. After Roy took her off the meds she hunts a lot better......

My female has had it about a year, she has nights that I see her old self and I get my hopes up. She doesn't hunt near as hard or fast, she still trees lots of coons just doesn't have the high gear going very often. She still is able to compeat with most hounds, so I hold out hope for her complete recovery.

Never have seen one go back to their old self. Think Jeff has got the right idea prevent all you can. Dogs rebound from it but never 100 percent I don't believe. Can still be nice dogs though.

Had an 8 year old die from it last October. I thought he was just starting to show signs of old age. It was too late by the time we started his meds.

Vet said he never saw it in any dog this young so I hope he will pull threw good being young and caught quick. He just started showing physical signs this week. Seems like it's always the good ones that have the bad luck. I appreciate all the replies even tho it don't sound like full recovery is very likley I'm goin play it threw and c how he does. Way to nice young dog to give up on.

Boy was 15 months old when he got it . He had won 4 hunts in a row. I got ticks off of him 1 time . I have retreated boy twice laid him up hunted him just a little here and there . It's bn 10 months and last night I stood there just shaking my head thinking what in the world is he doing. The next 1 of mine that gets this , I will do 1 of 3 things, put em down , give em away, or just have a big pet .

So did it work on ur dog ? Imizol is suppose to be a secondary treatment , but I am sure the doxy doesn't really work .

I am sorry to hear that- I am in same situation as you with big boy - so I sm not going to b&t days or purina nationals . He was 16 months old when he got it, he had only got ticks on him 1 time .

5 days in on my dogs meds all most all physical symptoms are gone. Bouncing on chain acting best I saw him look or feel in bout month. Can't help but hold out hope this is just small set back. May 5 I get take him back to woods. Goin stay slow just night or 2 a week threw summer then hopefully full force in fall. Had bout 50-50 feed back some saying hound ain't never been same since get sick others say can't really tell difference. Hope catching it quick will lean things in my favor. Sold every hound I had to focus and push this pup then he gets sick. Guess that why they say don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I had my female get t she was 5 and never was the same. I also asked my vet if there was anway to prevent it. He said even if you use fle and tick collars or what ever they will still get it. He said all the tick has to do is bite them said they don't have to stick.

Keep him on the Doxy for at least 6 weeks to make sure that it doesn't come back. Some Vets will tell you that they only need it for 3 weeks but don't believe them. And I would give him 300 mgs/day. Some Vets also say that 100 mgs/day is enough.

What is Imasol? I tried to Google it but could not find anything. There is quite a bit about Erlichia if you look for it. The experts seem to say that you have to do blood tests to check for red blood cell counts to actually diagnose Erlichia and damage from it rather than just titers. There is also an acute phase and a chronic phase that can last in some dogs but not all. Apparantly long term damage depends on their immune response.

Type in Imizol - my vet can get it for me for 77.00 for 10 cc. I have had blood drawn again and sent to Texas as soon as it comes back I will decide whether to use Imizol or not. It's a drug that is not exactly for this I foget what it really is used for but I am going to try it anyway. This erchilia has bn describe to me like a person having a stroke - some cases like my mom where severe and some r not . In case like my mom it killed 1/2 her brain , some dogs have same results the damage is not reversably.
