Questions For All

OK, SAY YOU HAVE A REALLY NICE FEMALE WITH A GOOD PEDIGREE. YOU DECIDE YOU WANT TO BREED HER....YOU NOW HAVE ALL STUD DOGS IN THE WORLD TO CHOOSE FROM.....

YOU HAVE:

THE DOGS THAT ARE WIDELY PROMOTED,

THE DOGS WITH ALL GRAND PEDIGREE'S,

THE DOGS THAT ARE EVERYNIGHT COON TREEING MACHINES WITH GOOD EVERY NIGHT COON DOGS IN THEIR BACKGROUND BUT NOT ALOT OF TITLED DOGS IN THREE GENERATION PEDIGREE,

THE DOGS THAT ARE SUPER STAKES/ PERFORMANCE SIRES,

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT MAKING YOUR FINAL DECISION?

NOW THE POLL,

STUDS NARROWED TO TWO,

YOU HAVE ALL GRAND PEDIGREE WITH MEDIOCRE HUNTING ABILITY(WITNESSED FIRST HAND) BUT IS OBVIOUSLY PACKED WITH REPODUCING ABILITY....

AND

YOU HAVE AN ALL NIGHT COONDOG THAT HAS A MEDIOCRE PEDIGREE AS FAR AS TITLES GO BUT IS FILLED WITH EVERY NIGHT COONDOGS AND WAS IMPRESSIVE IN THE WOODS(WITNESSED FIRST HAND)

WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?

I would choose B. I want it in the woods not on the papers.

Depend on if you want to keep a pup or trying to sell them all. I voted B cause I'd probably keep one and I want a hunter not a pretty-boy.

I wouldn't choose either till I had some woods time with their pups or at least knew someone who did.

if you think you can only get what you are looking for in the untitled dog then do it.if you are trying to get those pups into competition hunters hands then you should keep looking.

It shouldn't make a difference if the stud was titled or not as to people putting the pups in hunts......but why does it?

If your female isn't all grand, it kind of takes away the reason to breed to the all grand. People do like to see a good pedigree up close.

it shouldnt, but most seem unable to find the time to check them out 1st hand......most real good crosses nowadays will catch the attention of those who want an edge in the hunts.realisticly why would someone look at a 3 gen. pedigree full of dogs with no titles and none on their pads and expect competition hunters to invest their time to such chance?
also you do not see many pedigrees full of untitled dogs that are dna profiled---todays breeder realizes the importance of good lineage and are culling the shadowy pedigrees from their consideration.

Decision, decisions.

You present a tough choice.
Sounds like you have done some studying on the issue if you have narrowed it down to two.
First forget about all grand at this point. Titles are worth about as much as the paper there written on. All it has done is show me that this dog's parent's, grandparent's, etc. must have had something going for them and in all likelihood could probably tree a coon. The papers have served their purpose it got my attention. Now there has to be another reason for this dog to still be under consideration especially since you say he is only mediocre at best. You say he reproduces. Have you hunted with his pups? Are they better than their old man? Are they all better? Most? Some? What females has he been bred to to produce these good pups. Do all the females irregardless of bloodline throw good pups off of him. If not which bloodlines are doing well and which aren't How does that compare to your female. The all grand dog will get a detailed study as he already has strike against him by being mediocre and in all probablity will be eliminated from consideration. Before I leave this one let's look at the famous names on paper. Are they just names or are they known for reproducing. Are their get known for reproducing. Are they even compatible. Is this pedigree a planned collection of coondog to coondog with related traits or a collection of who's who with no thought to compatibility.
I know there are dogs out there that somehow produce better than they are and while this should be true of every generation it ain't so most of the time. His pups better be world beaters or I'm moving on to the next one.

Dog two seems to be the better prospect but again needs more research. There are alot of dogs out there that can get it done in the woods but due to some twist of genetics aren't putting it into their pups. Again what are his pups doing. Here are they at least as good as dad. Again what females are throwing the good ones. Compare to your female. The same in depth study of the dogs on the paper is also merited here as well. What are your goals with this litter. Can you keep and finish off most of them or get them to the folks that will. If moving pups is the goal then forget the research and go with the all grand. If solid little coondogs are what you want do your homework and choose wisely.

With all the studs out there, if I couldn't find an every night coondogs with the pedigree I wanted that is superstaked and performance, I would keep looking.

I bet you can find all of this if you are willing to put in the time.
