I start my puppies at 3 weeks on the bench. They are all bench broke by the time they leave me.
For puppies: place on the bench 2-3 times per day for no longer than 5 minutes. hand under their chin, and hand by their bum. This will help you keep them standing on the bench and from tucking their tail or bum under. Once they settle, let the puppy down.
For Adults: They're usually easier because they are uncomfortable on the bench. Place your hand on their chest, and stack their front feet, read your breed's standards - some breeds have to be cat pawed and some do not. Place the back feet where the tip of the toes line up with their bum. If you need to, lift between their back legs to get them to stand up all the way.
Adults that are new to bench training should be worked 3 times per day for 15 minutes each time. Your expectation should be: Leaving feet where you put them, and holding their posture. Do NOT let them off the bench until they do what you want, otherwise you are teaching them bad habits and that can be difficult to break.
