Depending on her age, it has been my experience based on a number of years that as dogs grow old the will not keep their weight NO MATTER how hard you try. I usually keep my dogs until they die of old age and the one thing that stands out is when they get older the weight loss is coming. I have done everything possible to keep weight on these older dogs, but NOTHING worked. Much like humans as we age we do not get the nourishment from the food we eat and lose weight in our older years. Sadly it's just something we can not control. Now I am talking about dogs in the 12 year and older range, some maybe sooner, but they ALL will lose weight as they age. Dave

Sneakyone

I get beef fat and scraps from local butcher shop. I keep some cooking in a old crockpot Nov. thru Mid Mar. My dogs get beef broth on their food every feeding. I feed Dog Chow year round. I really like my feeding program. All 6 dogs are in great shape. Their age range is 18 months to 11yrs.

Dave:

I will keep my old dogs till the end. My old boy goes every time I go hunting. He is good on a couple short runs and trees then he just stays with me. We listen to the younger dogs running tracks together. He needs a head scratch now and then. And he has became a me too dog. He still bets me to the trees. LoL! All this is alright, because he has given me several years of great enjoyment.

Randi, I hear you man, I love old dogs and they deserve to be taken care of until they die. They have given you the best times of their lives and deserve owners like yourself that still appreciate them, even when they are no longer at the prime of their life. Thank you Randi for caring. Dave

weight on old dogs

Chicken liver, beef liver, even deer liver when they won't eat anything else.... May not put the weight on you are looking for, but will keep them alive!

If you just want to put weight on them cook up some plain pasta and mix it in with their dog food. Pasta will put weight on a dog quickly but they won’t hold that weight if they are being hunted hard.

If you’re going to feed just plain dog food you likely need to go to something that will be more expensive than the run of the mill average priced dog food. Look up what the sled dog guys use. Most of them if they don’t cook up their own will use a lot higher end food than most hounds men are willing to pay for.
