I am training a bluetick hound female to sq hunt. She is now 18 mth old.The good is:she started very young.Uses her eyes .will timber a sq all over the place.Treed sq with her last year as a pup.No curr has a mouth as loud as hers. She never stops hunting and handles great. Can find a sq.The bad:is not so much bad as it is just different than a curr or feist. She has alot of nose and opens on tracks. You cant tree her when she first opens like you can most currs.Needs to settle on the right tree quicker.Nails the tree on a hot sq.I also coon hunt her.she will probably be a better coondog than a sq dog.She needs coonhunting by herself.Ive coonhunted her with my good male.

George, this would be the perfect bluetick female to cross a a cur dog to get a coon dog or squirrel dog deluxe. Dave

I've read 100 posts on here about dogs treeing squirrels after dark, why shouldn't they tree them before dark?

I bet I've seen squirrels in trees over dogs at night. Even one female that would drive you crazy in flying squirrels.

I have seen 2 in my 42+ years of Hunting and both times there was a Coon in the tree.

Most of the night time squirrels are flying squirrels that dogs see and react to. Slick trees can be flying squirrels or a dog that is tree happy and trees on every little scent they smell. I have hunted cur dogs that trees squirrels in day coons at night and never slick trees. Dave

..

X2, just to tree happy, not using their brain ( if they have one ), just their nose. A good dog uses their brain as well as their nose to tree game. I have watched good dogs go right past a slick tree and never look back until they treed the coon. No matter how many dogs were treeing on the slick tree. BRAINS. Dave

To answer the original question. I hunt a 16 mo old out of sunday best(tank) x a power pack bitch on squirrel. If he opens he is treed. I've had curs for 25yrs, this walker is the best I've had and one of the better I've seen out of any breed of Sq dog. Not a blow thru there dog either. You won't have near as many quirky dogs when using hounds as you will the others either.

Did you raise him from a pup or was he treeing squirrel when you got him? If you raised him, how did you start him? Just interested.

What I mean by quirky is the backwards acting, spooky acting ones. I'm not even considering them a one man dog, cause they don't even fully trust their owner, no matter how well they've been taken care of.
