Grandnight not acting right

I have an older grandnight that was laid up for about two years because of work schedule. Have started to hit it hard again and dog is looking bad. I have been taking him out right after dark and he is just hitting trees and coming treed. Maybe squirrels? He has treed one or two coons here and there and have had them shot down but has resorted back to just slamming these trees. Should this dog be corrected at the tree? Smart dog but really looking silly. Thought would be appreciated.

Anything preventing you from waiting until 2-3 hours after dark just to see if that makes difference?

Of course if it’s flying squirrels he’s hitting on that won’t do you any good as they, like coon, are nocturnal animals.

Maybe could try putting him down with another coon dog just to knock off some of the rust from being laid up for 2 yrs.?

NY is bad for Lyme disease. Have you had him checked? It does funny things to dogs.

Thanks guys for the input. Funny you say that about the Lymes..... He had it last year and had all the testing and medication. I will have him checked again as he is due for his shots anyway.

Yeah………..my longtime hunting buddy put one of his dogs down last year after 3 years of trying to get the Lyme issues taken care of. Put him on Doxy it would get better for awhile then within a few months back again.

Not sure there is a 100% cure other than death.

Yes that is exactly what he was on. He is acting ok energy wise and that but I will have him checked. Hoping its just a bad care of "rust". Thanks for the reply Dan

Ok #1 a positive test does not mean a dog has lymes or any other tick disease they may test positive for the test simply means that a dog has antibodies for it, the dog has been exposed and it's immune system has produced antibodies to fight off the vector, bacterium or ect. It does not mean that the dog needs current antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics are extremely over used in dogs just like humans. Long term use can have serious consequences for your dogs overall health. All to often a dog that shows zero symptoms just a positive snap test with no further blood work are put on 60 days of antibiotics. These test can show positive for years after exposure but do not conclude a current illness that will require treatment.
Now that being said most of you who know me know I'm a research fanatic and our dogs health and wellness are my passion. I've recently been reading studies on chronic lymes disease in humans and a drug we are very familiar with that is also showing great promise in the treatment of cancer has been the subject of these studies... ivomectrin! If I had a dog that suffered from chronic illness caused by lyme I would seriously consider checking further into it. I'm not a vet but I would use basically the same protocol as slow ivomec treatment for dogs with heartworms (talk to your vet ask them to look into the human studies. Many of the diseases that we may suffer from are treated with similar protocol). I'm doing some further research on various herbs for immune support, and those that offer natural antibiotics that are safe for dogs and liver cleansing for dogs. I'm pretty familiar with these for human use but need to some research on safety in dogs before I would give any advice on use.
For all of you that have had your dogs on these long doses of doxycycline if you haven't already please start you dog on probiotics or active culture yogurt.

Thank you for taking the time to post a very informative response. This is definitely something worth doing a bit more research on my part.

Your welcome. Your dog could have something underlying but if he had not been hunted in 2 years he could be just pulling up short from being out of shape and out of practice. Have a CBC ran on him to check his counts out if his counts are good then he is most likely what the old timers called pen stale. Not everything is a health issue some just need a little discipline to put them back on the right again.
