Staying with the theme of last week, this week’s column is going to be focused on quality rather than quantity. But in this case, both numbers are unreal. This week’s column is about GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat Attack. I’m surprised I’ve made it this long without writing about him. It’s partly due to the fact that I couldn’t locate a stud ad on him which is the whole premise of the article. Maybe he didn’t require much advertisement. Otherwise, Rat was an easy choice. For starters, he has sired the most nite hunt titled pups of any coonhound in UKC’s database. That coupled with the fact that he has produced the 6th most pups by sheer numbers in the Treeing Walker breed, and that over 22% of the pups he sired achieved a title, prove he is well deserving. Let’s get to Rat.

Rat Attack was born in September of 1994 as part of an 11-pup litter. 6 of the 11 dogs in the litter ended up titling out and most threw at least one litter of pups as well. And though Rat is responsible for a large portion of the 2,713 pups produced by the dogs in this litter and the 617 titled dogs that came from those pups, he had some help from his littermates. Some of those littermates include GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Night Heat Abby, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Night Heat Trixie, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rock River Sue, CH ‘PR’ Pine Meadow Treeing Dixie, and NITECH ‘PR’ Crow’s Hickory Nut Heat.

Surprisingly, Rat’s first litter wasn’t born until November of 1997 when he was over 3 years old. And it didn’t take long after that for Rat to drop a couple litters that put him on the map. In February of 1998 a female named ‘PR’ Tar Stylish Kate dropped a 9-pup litter out of Rat that had 8 pups title out. Those 8 were NITECH ‘PR’ McCluskeys Go Joe, GRCH ‘PR’ Stylish Jo Attack, NITECH ‘PR’ Ridgetop Zack Attack, GRCH ‘PR’ Ryans Stylish Jill, CH ‘PR’ Johnson’s Rough River Joker, NITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Hammering Hattie, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Awesome Annie, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Bad Habit. Then 4 months later, NITECH ‘PR’ Pharr’s Stylish Silk dropped an 8-pup litter with 4 of them titling out. Those 4 were NITECH ‘PR’ Weakley Creek Stylish Eli, NITECH ‘PR’ Deep South Skatatac, NITECH ‘PR’ Current River Stylish Candy, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Tequila Sunrise.

As the century turned, Rat really hit his stride. In 2000 alone I’m going to mention 3 litters. The first was in April out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hadden’s 100 Proof Molly. Together they produced 5 pups with 4 of them finishing out including NITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Gin N Juice, GRNITECH ‘PR’ 100 Proof Rat, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Sam Houston, and NITECH ‘PR’ Pattison Little Brat. Three months later in July, a litter out of Rat and CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Valley Creek Kate hit the ground with 5 of the 8 pups titling out including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Parkers Style, NITECH ‘PR’ Valley Creek Jazz Time, NITECH ‘PR’ Rocky Mountain’s Wicked Witch, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Soggy Bottom’s Double Dot, and GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Valley Creek Kate 2. Then 4 months after that, another litter hit the ground, this time out of GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Beard’s Hardwood Stylish Dixie. Out of the 6 pups in that litter, the following 4 titled out, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Elvis Attack, CH NITECH ‘PR’ Out of Order Chewy, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Beard’s Just Rattling Dixie, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Beard’s Hardwood Dolly.

2001 brought more of the same. First with a couple May litters, starting with one out of ‘PR’ Stylish Mandy. 5 of the 9 pups in that litter titled out including NITECH ‘PR’ Jack Attack, NITECH ‘PR’ Rats Real McCoy, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Stylish Candy, NITECH ‘PR’ Timber Ridge Fancy, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Stylish Jeni. Then that same month ‘PR’ Coates’ Lockdown Jill dropped a 9-pup litter with 6 of them achieving titles. Those 6 were NITECH ‘PR’ Hughes Jezzabelle, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Indian River Cane, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Wipeout’s Jade Ice, NITECH ‘PR’ All Night Smoke Ring, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Wipeout Chiller, and NITECH ‘PR’ Snake Creek Milo. One month later in June, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Mills’ Nailit dropped another 8-pup litter with 5 more titling out including GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Bond’s Rat Attack Shorty, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Rat Poison, NITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Sackum U Rat, NITECH ‘PR’ No Lie Eli, and NITECH ‘PR’ Mills Nocturnal Kate.

Excuse me if I sound redundant but 2002 was also a record year for Rat. Let’s mention 4 litters from this year. First in May out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Maniac’s Hardwood Slough. 4 of those 5 pups titled including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Swamp, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Breeze, GRNITECH CH ‘PR’ Hardwood Flying Nun, and CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Lot Lizard. Then in June GRNITECH ‘PR’ Still’s Stylish Trixie dropped 7 pups with 5 of them titling out. Those 5 were GRNITECH ‘PR’ Horse Range Stylish J-Lo, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Moon’s Super Bee, NITECH ‘PR’ Stylish Lone Pine Misty, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rats Magic Trick, and GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Still’s Stylish Panic Attack. With winter came a couple more top litters. In November GRNITECH ‘PR’ Stylish Witch dropped 6 pups with 5 titling including NITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Stylish Prime Time, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Still’s Stylish Witchdoctor, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Witch’s Warlock, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Smoky Mtn. Hannah, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Death Wish. Then just shy of Christmas, 5 more titled pups were born in an 8-pup litter out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Flint’s Terrible Tiny. Those 5 were NITECH ‘PR’ Back Country Dude, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Morgan’s Rat Shot Lock Down, NITECH ‘PR’ Flint’s Big E, NITECH ‘PR’ Morgan’s Rat Lock Down Lisa, and GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ West Fork River Molly.

Old age didn’t slow Rat down much. He continued throwing highly successful litters late in life and the early years after his death by way of semen. Like the 9-pup litter born in August of 2003 out of NITECH ‘PR’ Raccoon Valley Queen that produced 5 titled dogs. Those 5 were NITECH ‘PR’ The Phantom Steamer, NITECH ‘PR’ Raccoon Valley Sling Blade, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nothing Fancy, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Abrams’ Harper Valley Gander, and CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rats Queen Patch. Or the litter in June of 2004 out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Stylish Molly that saw all 7 of the pups title out, including NITECH ‘PR’ DeBords Lady Dye, GRNITECH ‘PR’ DeBord’s Candy, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Cascade Jack Attack, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hawk’s Traxx Attack, NITECH ‘PR’ Smith’s Stylish Rebel, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Tree Talking Razz, and NITECH CH ‘PR’ Lick Creek Rattler. Or even the litter in June of 2006 out of GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hard Rock’n’ Storm that had 5 of the 6 pups finish out including GRCH NITECH ‘PR’ Rat Attack’s Last Chance Rat, NITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Pusher, NITECH ‘PR’ The Real McCoy, NITECH ‘PR’ L&K Rats Brat, and GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Pinky.

Semen has lengthened Rat’s incredible reign in the coonhound world, with him producing litters of pups well after his death. Like the 7-pup litter born in January of 2010 out of CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Track Mans Hot Sauce that again saw all 7 pups title. Those 7 were GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rats Frozen Dreams, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Rat Attack’s Last Warrior, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ All Grand Ratt Attack, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Sauce-a-Rita, NITECH ‘PR’ Diamond T’s Rat’s Hot Sauce, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Last Chance, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Smoky Mtn. Liz. Or let’s fast forward 9 years to November of 2019 when a 9-pup litter out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Harry’s Glamerous Gabby hit the ground with 4 of those titling so far. Those 4 are GRNITECH ‘PR’ Bartlett’s Zack Attack AKA Rat, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Sundown’s Rat Trap, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Rat Attack’s Insane Baby Jane, and NITECH ‘PR’ Rat’s Desperate Housewife. Or we can mention the Runner-up in the 2022 UKC Coonhound World Championship, GRNITECH(2) ‘PR’ Bozo’s Stylish Whitey, born in July of 2017 out of Rat semen and ‘PR’ Harry’s Stylish Candy. One thing is for sure, with a litter born as recently as December of 2021, this won’t be the last we see out of Rat Attack.

Larry Cooper deserves a mention here as he originally purchased as a pup and trained Rat then sold him as a yearling I believe. Larry is a U.S. veteran, and treasured friend.

Great article!
Thanks for posting Trevor, we bred to Rat 7 times and still have that blood in my dogs today. He was definitely one of a kind! it's a shame that he isn't shown on the all time producers list.
