a look at where I hunt

One of the places I hunt quite a bit in Wyoming. Nice piece of public land where I relocate a lot of raccoons to.

Dumped a coon loose there tonight and saw this guy:

It really varies with the time of year. In the Fall, I'd say average run is 10 minutes from when they open till they tree.

Late February, coons in rut, it's nothing too have a run go over a mile.

Do you hunt on foot, mule, horse, or ATV?

A few private places I go, I hunt by vehicle. I prefer sitting in or by the truck until a dog trees and driving to him.

This particular spot is all foot. No vehicles allowed. It's a quite a hike in and out... but that means you almost never see anyone else in there. Most people are surprised there is that nice of a creek bottom in it.

I've often theorized it would be a perfect place to have a mule (even in the day when I'm packing 50 pounds of corn for a 1/2 mile to a feeder). If I had a place to keep a mule it is something I would try. Chasing bobcats in there would be doable if I had a good mule! For now I keep (or attempt) them broke off bobcats.

I grew up hunting in SW Okla. We did have some river bottoms but most of our hunting was down creeks or draws with pasture or crop land on either side. I now live in NW AR and it's completely different. Both are good hunting but I miss the long races we had in Oklahoma. We called them ridge runner coon and they could run.

As a rule generally the prairie coon will provide a better race than river bottom coons. They would rather run than climb. They have a little different body type, typically being alot longer legged, none of that scuffling along when they run.

They are really migratory here, some times of the year they are mostly I'm brush and trees by water. Some times of the year they live deep in the hills, living in holes.

Wy

In 2009 I went to the World zone hunt in Worland, WY…
I don’t think they have sanctioned hunts there anymore.
Dean Carrol had good spots to hunt.

I go to Worland and hunt with Dean every month or two. Holding some $KC hunts there this Fall. You are correct, really great coon hunting there.

Every time we go out west Cheyenne admires those big bottoms lined with trees and a little creek or river running through. We always see quite a few coons killed on the roads in ways in these areas. I always point out the mountains in the distance and remind him his dogs would have to see what is in the other side of that mountain 😂. I'm surprised he's never taken a dog when we travel that way! Last fall while in Montana he was looking to see if there were any hunts near where we were. I'm thinking it was for future reference.

Bring a hound next time you pass through! Tons of porcupines are the only thing here you want to ensure your dog is broke off of!

Porkies

Wonderful little creatures aren't they. I think they outnumber the coons here about 3 to 1.

Easily 3/1 here... I'd suspect more. Of all the things I'll be patient with in a hound... Trashing out on porcupines is not one of them.
