Bench Shows

Just throwing a suggestion out how many would like to see a change in the shows meaning have a show for the show only dogs and a show for the hunting dogs?

I feel like the hunting dogs are at a disadvantage showing against show only dogs

I’m absolutely not trying to cause a uproar just wanted to get everyone’s opinion

One thing for sure you will never see a “Show” only dog be entered in a nite hunt lol.
Imo when we say a UKC coonhound then that’s completely different than say a UKC Walker, English, Leopard, Bluetick, Plott, Redbone, X Breed and Black-n-tan.
Breeds are breeds but to define one a coonhound should demonstrate that by running and treeing a coon. Which should be demonstrated before entering other events. One thing UKC is a business and it’s about making money. So I like the idea of having separation of show coonhounds and show dogs. It would generate more entries knowing that coonhounds wouldn’t be competing against showhounds.

I thought the reason for bench shows was to see what dog best fit the breed standard? Does it matter if the owner is able to hunt?

If Dog A is on the bench has scars and split ear from coon fights and hunting condition and meets the breed standard vs Dog B who’s treated like a king lives in the house and never been hunted and not a scratch on it and meets the same breed standard you wanna take a guess who’s going to win lol?

How about Nite Hunts just for show dogs? A dog would have to be a Grand Show Champion before it can be entered.

Oh wait, they have what we are asking for at Autumn Oaks every year.

Bench shows

As previously mentioned show or hunt should be the same.I for one when judging do not even consider war wounds on a dog.A bit of wear and tear does not change a thing.Just judge by the dogs standards, who is the closest wins.

Jack rule 20 of Bench show says “Working dogs are not to be penalized for scars or injuries caused by hunting”

Had a dog years ago lost his back left leg due to getting hung in a fence while coon hunting. You reckon a 3 legged dog win over a 4 legged dog on the bench?

He didn’t have a very good gait lol

Bench shows

If the dog is in the standard for its breed and has a missing tail, leg ,ear etc. due to hunting then it deserves the same scrutiny of a whole dog .If it is better than the rest then it wins regardless of injury. There is no genetic difference due to an injury. The gait problem is minor as it is not all about gait,a point system would work to pick the best.

Last show I entered my 19 month old male. It was a RQE I won best of show qualified for world Was the only dog there. Next show there were 2 female champions no males, left my male in the box. total of 3 dogs in 2 shows. Looks like the bench shows in my area are over. I'm too old to compete in the hunts any more. Started in shows and hunts in 1965. Now night hunts usually around 15 total dogs or less.

In 2017, GRWCH NITECH GRFCH GRCH(2) 'PR' Rex Ridge Whistling Ruby Red HTX was first for the Redbone Breed in the UKC Top Ten Bench Show Dogs. We did everything with her. I sure wouldn't have wanted to drive to competitions that only had one event.

I to had a Grand Show, Gr Nt, Water racer (didn’t make grand water but was a heck of water dog)
If you re read my quote it said “Show” ONLY
I am referring to owners who only show their dogs that’s it. They will never put a show only hound in a hunt.
Congrats Rex to an awesome Redbone hound!!
