Bobtail coon

Has anyone seen coons that look like their tail has been chewed off? I killed 1 in 30 yrs of hunting then killed 2 in the last 2 weeks. It doesn’t look like they were born that way they look like they recently lost it.

Harvested many over the years, probably one of two a year. most have a knot under the hide, at the bob, where it looks like it was damaged some how.

I'm surprised at these replies. I've been coon hunting 60 years and never saw a bob-tailed coon.

bob tail

pound for pound id putem up against anything on two or four legs, ive caught some with bob tails,3 legged and broken legs that had healed, but they were all close to a road in a heavy coon area.

I’ve caught many of them over the years . Most always a older boar coon. My understanding of it is that when they fight over breeding rights they actually bite at each others rear ends. This leads to severe damage to tail as it tries to protect its jewels. Don’t know if it’s true, but makes sense and the best I know all the ones I’ve got were large male coons.

The Amish fur buyers told me the same thing years ago

We killed two within the last week of season. One was at a meat hunt and ended up being biggest coon.

I’ve always been told it’s caused by the coon getting distemper and them chewing the tail off.

Must be an up north thing. Probably freeze their tails off.

I've killed a few over the years. Always figured it was because of fighting.

What Sonny and a few others said. Boars get to fighting and damage the tail to the point it falls off. I get several every year.
