Conkey’s

Finally bit the bullet and forked over the funds for one of these fancy thermals. I browsed for a while looking for the best price from a trusted source. Conkey’s was the way to go for me. Best price I could find, even beat ol Amazon. Thanks Bruce and staff for the new gadget. Ready to try it out tonight on these East Tn mountain coons.

I think you'll like it. Hunted with one for the first time Friday. Dog ran a track about 800 yards and treed. We walked about 500 yards to find them on a huge, thick, leafy tree. We never did see the coon, but he found a dark lump in the leaves and said he thought it was the coon. He shot where he saw it and a coon fell out.

Donald, if it helps me find them in a hemlock then it’ll be worth the money! Nothing ruins a good moment like a dog burning up a track and treeing real hard then you end up walking in to a big hemlock!

X2, I have treed in countless hemlock in my 50 plus years of coon hunting in these mountains. I have found my share of coons in hemlock, but treed many that I never found. Heck, you could tree a bear up a big hemlock and not see it if it did not look. Lol. Dave

WOW, so much for firearm Safety 101---

ALWAYS know your target before shooting!!

Now before your under ware gets to tight and your voice changes, I have no problem using it or finding the game, but "and said he thought it was the coon. He shot where he saw it", that I have a problem with.

Just remember there's a lot of "OTHERS" that are on these message boards and FaceBook and I feel they don't like what we enjoy and do, please don't feed the enemy with "things' that can be used against us.
Thank you.

I can see where you are coming from, but lets face the facts thst this is a HUNTING FORUM and things get put on a hunting forum. The notion that we have to be politically correct and never mention the obvious things we do is in itself a big fat lie. When it comes to being afraid of mentioning that we shot an animal on a hunting site, thats absurd. Dave

No problem with that—

Problem I said is shooting at a target that they didn’t know what it was for sure😉

And if you think that it’s all fine on a hunting site, ask the guy that posted a coyote caught by hounds and he was taken to court because of the video and lost his State job.

Just saying

Have had one for a little over a year and I don't go hunting without it. Our trees still have a lot of leaves on them. Last night I treed three singles and found them all with the thermal. Now after I found them I could see them but don't know I would have ever found them as they did not look. It's a great coonhunting tool.

Old Timer, what you're saying makes no sense. We were hunting two 6-year-old dogs that have been straight for years. If they were trashing, whatever was in the tree could climb. It wasn't like we saw movement in a bush and shot. We did consider that our dogs might have treed a person and discussed it. If it was a person, it was a small person. we didn't think a three-year-old child could stay ahead of the dogs for 800 yards. We also discussed that at three years old he or she wouldn't have strong enough finger and toenails to make the climb. So, you see, we didn't just come into the tree guns-a- blazing we gave it careful consideration and did what hundred of coonhunters did that night. We harvested a real raccoon.

Donald, exactly my thoughts, number one you were shooting into s tree at an object that was treed by the dogs that only tree coons. Makes no sense to believe you done wrong by not having a visual picture. We have all shot at spots that turned out to be the coon, why deny the facts. I do not have a state job to worry about losing and I am to old to worry about hurting the antihunters feelings, so be it. Dave

There you have it kids--

From the expert.

"I am to old to worry about hurting the antihunters feelings, so be it."

But this old guy does worry what the anti hunter and anti gun people hear and read and what they do think and the power they have. It's a lot harder to keep our rights then loose them. And with whos in DC now it has gotten even more scary.

So just keep shooting at those dark spots and feeding those 6 year old "coon dogs" fur and hope the Horse Shoe doesn't fall out.

Old Timer, I sure hate that you do not have the gumption to stand up for your rights, but that in itself is the problem we all face in this country. The silent majority afraid to speak out or stand up to the various minority factions that push their agendas through while folks like you cower in the corner afraid to stand up. A true democracy is majority RULE, things like this just point out how the minority factions prevail. We all have a voice and a vote, speak out and be heard, take a stand or keep your mouth shut. Cowards die a thousand times over, while valients taste death but once. Do you even have an idea how many hunters are in our 50 states and the thousands of hunting articles written about hunting? You worry about someone shooting at a spot the infrared said was a animal, get a life, support your local hunting clubs and vote when needed.Facts are that over 15 million hunting licenses are sold in the US every year and studies show 80 percent of Americans support legal hunting, that's way more than a simple majority. While hunters numbers were decreasing every year until recently when the pandemic and need to hunt your own game has caused a rise in the number of hunters. My figures are published facts that anyone can check. While I do not advocate showing dead animals, I certainly DO NOT shy away from the fact that I do indeed hunt and kill some animal legally. Dave

Well,

What I have learn from Special Forces. The problem with your number of licenses sold is really only bought by about 4% of the total population so “we” are outnumbered PERIOD.

Ask Wisconsin how their Wolf season went this fall? Have you checked the membership of the Humane Society lately?

So you fight the way you want and this “coward” will fight the way we were trained and taught😉😉

Peta has a 6.5 million membership less than half the number of hunters that BOUGHT licenses, while we have an untold number of hunters that are exempt from buying licenses so the hunters have in the neighbour of 3x Petas membership. One would also, have to speculate that many members of Peta are in name only and not very active. 80 percent of the American population approve of legal hunting, just how many million people do you think that is? The one THING Peta has going for them is folks like yourself attacking other hunters methods. Please remember that United we stand, divided we fall. Thank you for your service, but know that I was also, a military officer that had war experience myself. A good defense is always a good offense. Take the battle to them, do not let them bring the battle to you. You are always going to have some controversial hunting season questioned in some states i.e. wolf, bear, etc. that takes a United front to win, standing back doing nothing allows the anti bunch to win. Hunting as a whole is alive and thriving in the USA. 86 percent of all men in the USA supported legal hunting while 73 percent of all women in the USA supported legal hunting, you do the math on population of over 330 million people.

I respect your right to your opinion, but you should respect the rights of other folks opinion. You threw "shade" on another hunters method.and was disrespectfu more than once. Peta loves this one hunter against another hunter, if we can not support each other, we should at least be neutral. We have NOTHING to gain by jabbing at each other on a public forum. Dave. p.s. Don't know what you was taught, but I was taught to attack the ENEMY, not my men.

Well, King of the Mountain—

No where did I say I had a problem with the use of the method to find the game treed, I said I have a problem of pulling the trigger when not sure of the target. That was it.

And the comment made about a 3 year old was funny BUT not far from want happened when hunting in the early 60’s for us. Dogs opened in the corn and took it out and treed. As we were going to the tree, what did we find in a tree?? Yep, a man who was running from the Law. He was hiding in the corn and when the hounds opened he thought it was the Law on his trail. SO finding someone in a tree while coonhunting CAN happen.

So this track/tree is done for me and you can minus or circle but I’m sure it won’t get pulsed😂😂

Lol. Have a nice day, sounds like you really need one. We are in this boat together, so we should support each other. I am sure Donald will be careful now hunting in the swamps of La, never know what's up them trees, might even be sasquatch or the swamp man. Dave

I never dreamed shooting one coon would stir up such a fuss on a coon hunting forum.

Shusssssh, you may offend someone, or maybe not. It's time to stand up for your rights, silience is the foundation to one losing something. The minority factions in our society do one thing very well and that's SPEAKING OUT, crying until we placate them by giving in to their wishes. Ever wonder just how a small group gets their way, well it's because the larger group remains silent and stands back while concession is being given to the small group. Laws are being passed that only benefit a very small minority group, while the majority stands on their heads and wonder how it happens. Fear to offend or fear to stand up is strong for a lot of folks that let a crying baby get it's way. Our world is full of crying babies getting their way at the expense of a SILIENT MAJORITY. We are now catering to the wishes of special interest groups ignoring the wishes of the majority, look around and tell me that I am wrong. Either stand up for your rights or surrender to those who desire to defy the wishes of the majority. This subject matter was no place for a scared member to chastise another hunter, acting like the forum police desiring to not offend the antis. Heck if you can not be honest on a hunting forum about hunting get out of the game. Dave

This occurred to me last night. My "coon dogs" treed on a big gum tree in about 18 inches of water. While I was tying dogs, the man I was hunting with said he saw the coon. I looked and there were two bright eyes shining through the leaves at the very top of the tree. We never did see a coon, only eyes. I see pictures on this forum almost every day of a coon in a tree. My dogs haven't treed a coon I could take a picture of in years. Would it be wrong to shoot at these eyes not knowing what animal they were on?

Even with a thermal it may be a possum or your neighbors housecat. Shoot it!

Lol. You are spot on my friend, some advise is given with good intentions, but was not given to much thought. This thread has gone sideways, let's get back to the OP's thermal purchase and it's benefit, we can not please everyone. Dave
