Thermal - 25 vs 19 vs 15

I've heard a few users of the thermal 19 and 15 say they work just as good as the 25, at half the weight. I'd like to hear opinions of those that use the 19 or 15. I know the users of the 25s feel they are the best, but would like to hear from a 19 and/or 15 user.

.

First lets start with the AGM ASP 25. It is the first unit from AGM that came out and proved itself with the Coon Hunters. That unit at the present time has been discontinued. There are still some around for sale. The main thing that people like about it is there is a green light to show you when it is off or on. The negative is perhaps the price of $1795.

AGM has come out with the TAIPAN 15, 19, 25, The physical size of the unit is about half that of the ASP 25 which is a plus for me and carrying it in my vest.

The main dislike comes down to operator error. You have to learn hour to operate the on/off button on the TAIPAN. To turn it ON you push and hold the Power Button for 4 seconds. Once it is on you can put in SLEEP/STANDBY with a once second push of the power button. But it is still using the battery in standby. That is where most go wrong. They go to standby and leave it there, running down the battery. To turn in off you must and hold the power button 4 seconds like you did to turn it on. Then a window in the screen will come up that says SHUTDOWN with the option to toggle from CANCEL to OK. Just select OK and tap the M button and the unit if off. You master that which most can't you will love the TAIPAN Model. Cheaper, Smaller and works great.

Many ask the difference between the TAIPAN 15, 19, and 25. Now they just came out with a TAIPAN 10. I will say the 15 compared to a 19 is like comparing a light with a tight spot to one with a broader bean. The 15 can see most of the tree on 1x power while the 19 is like a tight spot on a light. You see a smaller part of the tree and have to sweep it to find the coon. But works great at longer ranges for Yotes and Hogs.

The Taipan 10 should work well for those wanting to save some money. At $795 the work well. Just the image is not as clear and grainy looking. If you just want to see where the coon is and not the grin on its face. Taipan 10 might be the way to go. At $1295 the Taipan works well for me and for Yotes and Hog the Taipan 19 is a good investment.

I got AGM 25 it amazing. BUT people still want to believe the thermal's are junk. If it aint there I don't care what you got it wont make a coon appear out of thin air. It has saved my dog because I cant find them coons like some guys can.

Kybufford, I agree on the amazing part. I started messing around with thermal units about 5 years ago. I tried to test out those that were affordable. I was disappointed. Then I started hearing about the AGM ASP 25. Like many people I got confused with all these model numbers and purchased a different companies thermal. Just didn't work that great. About that time I heard AGM was coming out with the Taipan model. I figured if their ASP 25 worked so well I would wait a little longer. Happy with my decision and my Taipan 15 works well. Actually it has not only allowed me to find Coon but opened some new methods when training.

Bruce the training part was my main reason. I wouldn't even say I'm average "Houndsman". Iv always had dogs and just hunted, when i got serious about training I wanted to give me and my dog the best chance to train. With the thermal it made me a lot more confident when we leave the tree. And i feel like my dogs got more accurate because i got the confidents to correct and send him on.

Your exactly right KYbufford. That is my biggest reason to have one. I can with confidence correct a dog. If I don't have confidence in the reason to correct one. I usually don't. That doesn't make for a better dog.

Thermal - 25 vs 19 vs 15

Well, I wanted to know for sure, so I purchased a 15 after purchasing the 25. Both are real nice, but I agree the 15 is a little tricky to get used to and may give a little grainier view when looking at a coon. However, the 15 seems to work better for me down here in very very thick underbrush. Having said that, I have my AGM ASP 25 for sale. It is like brand new. I've used it a handful of times and it's had the best of care …. no scratches, looks brand new. Save yourself $150 off the new price. I'll ship it to you for $1645.

A little grainer may not be the results of it being a different model. There is one thing that I was told by a reliable source and that is when you turn them on the lens cover or cap should be in place and you let it start up focus itself with the cap on. If you don't over time you will start to see what looks like sand in the lens.

Aslo as you know. You have a 1x, 2x, 4x 8x setting. I never see a need for anything more that 1x and at the most 2x when coonhunting. You get to 4x and 4x especially and it gets grainy.

I had mine on a damp night start to get grainy just a few weeks ago. I did a software update and it works fine. Several videos on line to help explaining the update.

Bruce,

I appreciate your insight...very helpful as always.

If you hear of anyone wanting a AGM ASP 25 but don't quite want to shell out $1795, I'll take $1595 for it … $200 savings off a new one, and it's like brand new.
