Need some advice from some of you experienced guys. My dog has been overheating so bad he an barely bark treed. When it's below 70 be trees good and normal. Anything over 70 he overheats so bad just stand at the tree and looks like he's going to have a heat stroke. He's a small built dog and this problem has just occurred and wasn't this way before. What questions should I ask the vet?

Hes on flea and tick prevention and a seresto collar and had both lymes vaccine shots this year. Any help of guidance would be greatly appreciated

I've had a few in the past get hot and it's one of 3 things the dog food is heating them up also need to do a blood panel at vet and also genetics in the hot weather if he was mine I would pull blood sample first also make sure. He is hydrated well

gets over 70 I find that staying in the house with the AC going and a Cold One in hand beats the heat, bugs and ticks. Hides aren't any good and heck our season isn't even open. So what I have found to be the best for my hound and my self is---DON'T HUNT. But that's just me and 65 years of finally figuring out why God primes their hides in the fall.

Try taking the seresto collar off. I had a dog that was constantly getting hot I took that off and he seemed a lot better. Something to do with the collar chemical constantly going to the skin can make them hot.

Give simparica trio or nexgard plus spray him down with permethrin spray from TSC before you turn loose and you shouldn’t have any problems with flea or tick. Try it tonight before you turn loose at the pro classic and see if it makes a difference.

First thing I would do is go to a low fat and protein feed and feed sparingly.You'll be suprised how little a dog needs in hot weather and a thin dog holds up better in hot weather. Don't worry about his ribs showing a little, they should be.
And unless you're tuning up for competition when it's over 70 take Old Timers advice. Your dog will most likely live longer too.

Ditch the kibble feed.... no matter who makes it....
At least switch to a canned feed....if u r dead set on convenience.

If not :

Try :
sardines/anchovies or canned salmon/tuna.
Yogurt
Raw calf liver
Dried kelp(food grade)
Chicken/turkey hearts/neckbones/livers(giblets)
turkey tails

Changeing a dogs feed going into a competition is a recipe for disaster..
This should of been done 3-6 months ago

P.s.
If for what ever reason u can't get away from kibble....add a digestive enzymes to the feed let set for 15-25 min.
What you'll end up with will be liquid feed.
Dogs digestive system won't work as hard break down the kibble .
Their by reduceing heat generated by digestion.

blood work for lymes. infected dogs can't take the heat
like mentioned go lower on feed amount and protein/fat content

I have a female that is hot natured. As a two year old I didn’t notice it as bad. She turned 3 and last summer. While getting her ready for the senior fall super stakes I started having some major problems with her overheating. She is a 45lbs dog and was in good shape. She got so hot she laid down in the middle of a cornfield on me one night.
I took her completely off dry feed. The corn tends to make it worse. For eight weeks I put her on a can food diet only. Along with that I swam her nearly every day. I rigged up a line across a small pond with a long lead rope on it. We started with short swims until she got built up. I swam her a minimum of 5 days a week for 2 months. I got her down where I could see her short ribs and her leg muscles were bulging. I swam her and still hunted her 4-5 nights a week. It really helped. It was hot and dry in September at the super stakes. Got beat but we competed without overheating lol.

I had the exact situation you are describing. Dog couldn't take the heat. Had him tested, and he came back positive for heartworms. Now treating him for that. Out of commission until treatment is over.

What dog whisperer said. Something to try if you don't want a complete diet change is replace 1/3 of his dry feed with canned food and soak the dry food several hours before feed time. Feed twice a day. A totally hydrated dog makes a huge difference. I've also have trouble with seresto

I was having trouble this spring when it started warming up and getting a little humid with my 18 month old female, now her mother runs a little hot as well, but I switched from the 30/20 proplan to the 26/16 and it didn't help much. Then when proplan went up I switched to the yellow bag Victor which is 22/10.5 and she is running much cooler and so is her mother. Not sure if its the less protein and fat or the no corn, but whatever it is it's working and I know from feeding livestock you want to give them some heat in the winter you feed them corn.
