Recovery Timeline for Bitch

Pups are five weeks old, doing good on dry food.

What’s the best way to dry up mama?

Can I hunt her this weekend or bad idea?

You should let the pups on her about 5 minutes a day for three or four days while she is drying up. They should drain her out good and that will keep any milk from hardening in her. If she is drawn up enough that you don't think she will tear anything by this weekend it would be ok to hunt her. I would ease her back into it on just a couple hour hunts especially if its hot where you live.

She can still get mastitis. I would leave her up until she's dried up.
Instincts for those pups are still very strong.

My proven method. Get a bottle of baby oil and go to local pharmacy and get a bottle of spirits of Campher. Mix them well. Let pups nurse all night. Remove them in the morning. Coat her well. Morning and night. Do NOT allow pups around her to attempt to nurse. That will start drying her up, keeping her teats soft. Should be able to hunt her within 10 days and within a month, might never know she ever had pups.

I kinda like my method. Let them nurse until their mom stops them. That's part of their training. Then I allow her to dry up by her self. That's not really my method, I stole it from Mother Narture.

Mother nature would be the best method. It also allows for gradual decreased milk production.
Everyone wants to breed their females but none want to truly take the time it takes for a dam to fully recover from having pups.
If any of you had ever nursed a baby you would realize how stupid it is to even consider weaning cold turkey all at once and then take your dam hunting that weekend.
If you wish to breed your hunting females be prepared to give them the time they need off or don't breed them.
Sorry, my lady rant for the day,
Jen

Just leave the pups for 5 to 10 minutes on her to dry her out in a better way.

I agree... I make it to where the bitch can get away from the pups anytime she pleases...she will wean the pups pretty quick when the time is right...

pedigree

Number one ,i would wait another week at least before taking pups away from her.Number two its best not to hunt her until she is well on her way to being dried up. Number three simplest way to dry her up, buy a ten pound bag of Pedigree dog food. Feed a pound a day for ten days .She will automatically dry up because of lack of nurishment in the food.Guarented to work.

Does anyone use any antibiotics when they dry a female up? I’m not a pup raiser person, however I live in a area of many puppy breeders. I’ve been told by some of the guys that make a living raising pups that they give a female amoxicillin for 7 days when they take the pups off her and it insures they don’t have any type of infection. This also keeps the female at a higher fertility level for next breeding.

It makes sense to me, but I raise very few pups myself and don’t have any first hand knowledge of it. Just some info that may help out.

This is interesting thread. Seen a handler hunt a female with 2-3 week old pups on it. Dog hunted great. He threw the pups and dog in the box and away they went. Now before everyone says the owner was an idiot he’s up there pretty far on all time $KC money list.

Do coyotes not eat for 5 weeks after they have pups? Or does the male mate bring it food? Not trying to be a smart a$$, just asking cause I dont know.

I’m all for hunting a dog if she ready. They’ll let you know.

My method and they dry up nice and tight.
i wean at 5-5 1/2 weeks when i pull the bitch off pups she gets no food and limited water first day. Second thru 4th day full water and a handful of food. After that normal ration. they suck up nice and tight.

And the dog T. Felderman is talking about is from IOWA

If you’re gonna leave them on her and let her wean them....which I think is the best, you better trim those little razor blade toe tails starting at about 3 weeks. She’ll tolerate them a little long I’ve found.
