I have (4) of them. Had them for (4) years. I don’t use any bedding. Dog houses are insulated walls, floor and ceiling. Going into my 5th winter. Houses stay in the mid 40’s to 50. Dog’s come out of the house on cold mornings (down as low as -20°) and they’re warm to the touch. I put 1-1/2” blue board with 1/2” plywood on top on the floor. Feed easily 1/4 to 1/3 less dog food in the winter than when I had no heaters. I live in NH so not uncommon to have below zero temps at times from late Dec. to early March.

I have them, and use bedding. I prefer hay or straw mixed with a little cedar shavings. I got the idea to mix the blessings from an old timer.

i keep heaters set at 45 insulated houses with old dog box pads and a little ceader chips to keep unwanted bugs away

I've used straw, but lately just continue to use wood chips pine/cedar mix with hound heater. The dog house stays at 60+ so most any bedding would be fine.

BUT, and this is important, clean the hound heater out. at least once a year. I take mine out for the warmer months. You'd be amazed how much dust accumulates inside them whether using straw or chips. And a friend lost an entire kennel and dogs due a fire caused by hound heater. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that there was a dust buildup inside and it eventually caught fire.

I take mine apart and clean it out pretty well before I put it in for the winter. Sometimes I'll used canned air and blow it out during winter season.

I'm still somewhat gun shy about them after friend losing kennel so I started investing in the Kane heated mats this year.

I haves used the heated mats for years, but this winter, my BMC got a rash on his belly that seemed to be from the mat, almosts like a heat rash, once I took it out of the dog house, the rash was gone , never had it happen before.

do you put anything specific over the heated mat that works well?
i know mine a had a cloth cover but it kept getting pulled off as he would situate himself

was thinking of switching to the hound heater or ceramic heater for next winter.
