If you are in the process of shining a tree, a handler cannot go handle his dog on another tree even if you can see the tree. So you were wrong to tell him to go handle his dog and really wrong to scratch him.
He was wrong to pitch a fit. He should have just questioned the scratch, voted on it and then taken y'all back to MOH if outvoted.
