Speed

I second Dogwhisper on his remark, and to paraphrase Townsend Whelen famous remark that only accurate rifles are interesting, I think only ACCURATE coon dogs are interesting. I love speed, but only with ACCURACY. Dave

Dogs

Speed doesn't help if they make mistakes and are not productive similar to a hard hunting dog what good is a wide hunting dog without results

.

I never put it above accuracy. Buy when you see one fast and accurate. You're seeing something special.

I have one that's kinda slow and accurate and I think she's special. Seriously, she hunts in a slow trot. I think a fast hunting dog would have a coon treed before she strikes sometime.

I thought you meant track speed when I saw the title and it got me interested LOL.

Track speed doesn't matter any more. It used to be one of the things that separated the good from the great.

Now it doesn't matter as long as it always trees by itself and has a coon it can be slow as Christmas and still win a ton.

That is a change I don't like but it is reality today.

Watching the garmin is not the way to judge it. I have had dogs circle around me get in a road and take off and couldn’t hardly catch them in a pickup they were not being productive at that speed. When you can appreciate it is when all dogs are on the same track and the dog with superior nose and track speed strings the others out and has the coon treed a substantial time before the others get there because the others don’t have his abilities.

The way a dog moves around is indicative of how productive they are likely to be.

People can say it doesnt matter above this, or above that, but that is the first thing I look at in a young dog, because if they have that, the rest is more likely to come with time.

I agree...If I don’t see it then I say it’s a 50/50 chance and I don’t like those odds...🧐

I agree, without desire/speed and intelligence you just have a nice dog.

Speed

Like Ken Risley said, I like speed if they have the desire and brains to go with the speed. I do not like a lazy dog, lazy dogs are like lazy people, they do not accomplish much in life. Dave

Are you asking about hunting speed or track speed? Both are different, and both can make or break you.

I like to see double digits consistently but there's only 25% of dogs and pups that can hunt at that speed. And even less that can track at that speed. But I will not hunt a dog if it doesn't hunt at least 7mph and track at 6mph.

The average person walks at 3 to 4 mph and can jog at 4-6 mph.

Lol. We are just barely shuffling along, my grass grows faster than me and old Tar move, especially in these mountains and that briar patch he hunts in. Tar said the last coon his dog treed died of old age before he made it to the tree. Unless they tree close to the truck ( road hunting ) I usually don't make it to the tree. I won't say me and Tar are slow, it's just that every one else is faster. Lol. Dave
