Turkey decoy modification
Howdy everyone,
Last year before turkey season I read something about the difference between red headed decoys and white headed decoys. I had an old tom decoy I bought when my boys first started turkey hunting. All it ever did was scare toms away. I decided to repaint it. I actually did a bunch of stuff to make it look more like a real tom, and you guessed it I painted the head white. First time using it in 2019, I shot a real nice tom with my bow 6 minutes into the first hunt. This year 2020, I tried to repeat last year. Again right after fly down, I had 2 toms attack my decoy. The only problem was it was too stinking dark to see my bow sight. I refused the shot, and the turkeys bolted.
Now, I have this other farm I hunt, but I rarely can get the turkeys to even acknowledge a decoy. So, I broke out a jake decoy. There was a group of 3 toms, and they completely ignored that jake. Now I did get 2 jakes to beat up my decoy, but the toms and hens ignored it for 5 hunts. I was going to take the jake decoy out of rotation and just use hens. I had the jake decoy sitting on our love seat in the living-room. I looked over at the decoy and realized it had a red head. So I broke out some acrylic paints and went back to painting the decoy's head white. This morning I set that jake decoy out there with a hen decoy. Just like they regularly do the 3 toms showed up in the corner of the field, but an hour later. Those 3 buggers ran straight to that jake decoy. I shot the nice tom taking up the rear of their Congo line.
Now, some of you may be thinking that I am just being lucky, but trust me typically the hee haw song was written for me. What I can say is this might really be something.
