Redbones

Why not to many people campaign them in the big hunts ?? I know there’s a few but just wondering why not so many red dogs as there is of the other breeds !!! Everyone I’ve ever hunted would tree coons as they came and go deep if they had too also very accurate hounds as well and not to mention had the meat when they treed and stayed treed all night if the had to !! Very determined smart hounds with good handles !! Good in the kennel as well as in the woods ... why are more people not hunting them they used to be popular back in the day why not now ?

Sounds like you have had good experiences with Red bones and I noticed you were wanting a pup, so you should buy a red bone pup. Richard Lambert has a nice stock of red bones, you should contact him. Dave

It's just what kind of paint job you like. Count the red, black and blue cars you see today versus the white cars. And you will see why people hunt Walkers. Plus if 80 of the top 100 dogs are Walkers that might be telling you something but I will guarantee they are just as many or more sorry walkers out there.

I don't think I agree with that I hear all the time about how trashy Walker dogs are. But years ago my entire deer dog pack consisted of reject coon dogs and not 1 Walker in the pack but I had all the other colors.

Night Cry, you answered your own question. The reason there aren't that many Redbones being campaigned is because there aren't that many Redbones.

I'm gonna go with the short version but still try to answer your question. Generally speaking they're calmer more level headed but usually come up short in one or more of these areas. Drive...Mouth...Nose....Temperament. Easier to find a walker dog not lacking as much in those areas but doesn't have the brain power to put them to good use.

They tend to start different, train different ,even sound different. If you look hard enough you can find any kind in any color but you're gonna look harder, longer and spend more to find top shelf material. And yes part of that is because theres less of them.

It is simple math. Even with good breeding practices, 10-20% of a litter will make good comp coondogs. If you have 100 pups, then you will get 10 nice comp dogs. If you have 1,000 Pups then you will get 100 nice comp dogs. Now look at the # of pups sired by the top reproducing studs in a breed.

When you are breeding dogs, it is very, very, very hard to get all of the traits that you want in pups. So most breeders concentrate on one or two. Historically most Redbone breeders have concentrated on brains while walker breeders have concentrated on tree and drive.

Black n Tan Redbones why n how often do they show up in a litter? I've seen where some are sold n registered as a crossbreed. I know some breeders cull them at birth. Has anyone bought one n train them? JesseJ

the percentage of redbone compared to a lot of other breeds is low,but I have had a lot of other breed hunters liked my reds when they drew them in the hunts, and a lot of other redbone hunters get the same compliments on there hounds to, and its all a person preference what breed they want to hunt.

Redbones

I like a real coon dog period, I do not care what color it is. I have hunted with some top notch redbones that I would certainly been pleased to own. I am a coon hunter and like to hunt with top notch dogs regardless of breed, it's the dog that makes the difference, not the breed. Mr. Lambert was correct in saying it's simply math, you are going to have more good dogs the larger the number of dogs in a certain breed. Mr. Stevens was correct in saying you will look longer and spend more for a top notch dog in a breed with fewer dogs to select from. Truthfully, there are not many top notch dogs regardless of breed and they command a premium price, if they can be bought. Dave

I've owned 1 redbone coondog in my life he was given to me as a puppy. He started as any other pup I had started with the old dog and he was running and treeing around the 6 time out. Started hunting him alone and was doing well. Unfortunately like any other breed of pup he hung him a deer and left the country and got ran over. In my limited knowledge in the redbone breed I didn't notice anything different about him but he was a big dark red good looking sucker. I would try another 1 but the simple truth is I don't know a soul around here that has any English, Blueticks, and Walkers I have no problem getting within 30 miles of my house and usually they are free usually them free ones turn out better. Every time I buy one they never turn out. I would say this if you got a Walker or English on the lead no saids nothing any other breed your going to take some revving.

What breeding was “get ahead lil red” and I have Drawn Shane maxey at a couple pkc hunts and he’s usually hauling a pretty nice red one. Got drawn out with Richard at pkc redbone days and he beat me on the late round.

Redbones

Dogs like people should be judged for what they are, not what color they are. As others have stated, you find good and bad in all breeds. I don't know a single serious coon hunter that would not be proud to own a top coon dog regardless of breed or color. Dave

Really great 1's are hard to get regardless of breed. If there good enough it wouldn't matter if there purple with pink polka dots.
Not 1 person could tell ya what breed it is if they didn't see it before it was cut loose. That's how different the breeds are.

I could listen to videos all day long (and have lol) and could tell you which ones are walkers and which ones are red before the camera hits them and be right 90% of the time. Have you never heard the expression "good mouth for a redbone "...

There's guys that are and have been searching non stop.....ask them. I don't mean any of that to sound negative I had red dogs years ago and I've got two now I'm just telling it like I see it. Wade Kuhns in Pennsylvania has loudest red dogs I've heard in a long time.

Basing it off color genetics of another breed that has both red and black & tan dogs, the red is dominant and black & tan is recessive. Both parents would have to carry the black & tan gene to produce one. It could be passed on many generations undetected because only one parent is carrying the black & tan color.

The black in a black and tan Redbone pup can come from a blanket backed ancestor. It doesn't have to come from a black and tan ancestor. Also, in bloodhounds either solid red or high tan is acceptable. At some point some enterprising breeder might have decided to add a little nose to his hounds. Of course he would have gotten larger, slower, close hunting hounds as a byproduct.
