It all depends on how severe your dog's arthritis is. Every medicine has side effects. You have to weigh the side effects against the severity and the results. You might be better off to Google "arthritis in dogs and treatment" to see what you get.

The most common would be carprofen (generic for rimadyl). Some corticosteroids work really well to but both have risk for long term use. Glucosamine is a supplement I would recommend. Talk to your vet weigh the options and benefits with the risks. Much of this is going to be dependent upon the age of the dog and the severity of it's condition.

Jen Cummings

That's the best advice one could give, there is NOT one " BEST" treatment that we are all wanting, treatments vary just like human treatments vary depending on each case. Thanks Jen for your post. Dave

I give each of my older dogs a baby aspirin after each hunt. it seems to help them move around when we come home. otherwise, they are stiff.

Some guys around this area use CBD oil that is prepared for K9 use and seem to like it. They use it on coyote dogs with good results. I do not know much about the oils but they said a lot depends on how it grown and extracted.

My dog was put on 1/4 tablet of Meloxicam for hers. Worked great and was only $4 a prescription.

Had a vet tell me to give an old dog aspirin for arthritis. Another vet had me give an aspirin a day for 30 days after heart worm treatment. He’ll be 15 in April.

Not to that point with our dogs yet, but saw ads for Cetyl M (Cetyl Myristoleate) on RFD TV. The dog can hardly walk and then it shows it running around.

For me and my horses:
Gloucosamine
Tumeric
Hyaluronic Acid

I've seen dog feed made for older dogs. You might want to check it out.

I have a fourteen year old dog that was having a hard time getting around. I changed his food and put him on Victor for senior dogs.
It made a world of a different for him. He acts like he is 5 years younger. I do not hunt him any more. He is just a yard dog now but a good one.
Thanks
