My MRI results showed torn ACL, Doctor says my choices are brace and physical therapy, reconstructive surgery, or knee replacement. I am going to try the brace ( 1500.00) and therapy before I elect surgery. I would like input from anyone who has a torn ACL as to what they choose and the results. Dave

I tore my PCL, close to the ACL- but not as serious. I used time, a brace, and some physical therapy and mine healed up great. The ACL does take more time to heal- but for my situation time healed it perfectly.

Back when I was a young man I tore my right ACL. I continued to work through terrific pain and knees swelling. Over time it got better but the results after the pain was gone was. No stability in that leg. I could walk straight just fine but if I started to turn it would go out on me, hurt a few days and be fine till it went out again. Some 20 years later I tore the meniscus and the pain wasn't as bad as the ACL but it constantly ached. Had better insurance then and I had both the meniscus and ACL repaired. Doctors and time has changed the methods of ACL repair. Also the extent of the damage. They use to take a section of your own ACL and make repairs. Mine was done with a cadaver ACL attached to some bone blocks. The just drilled some holes in my bone and stuck in the bone blocks and screwed them in.

I had a friend go in this morning for knee replacement and they have you up and going in no time. I might consider that. My ACL was outpatient surgery 30 years ago. At my age today. I also would think hard about just the brace. Unless there was a some reasons to replace the whole knee like Arthritis or some other problem.

last year I worked out of the country for 8 and a half months. was due to come home at the end of September. Got home on the 30th. Was looking forward to doing nothing but hunt and trap for the next few months. Well, it didn't happen that way. Two days after getting home, I broke my left ankle in 4 places, had 2 torn ligaments and 1 detached ligament. Had surgery on Oct. 15th. I am still not 100%. This getting old crap is no fun whatsoever. Rob

Thanks Guys for the replies, I just worry about the risks of surgery blood clots, etc. and I really y want to go the brace and therapy routine to see how that goes. My doctor said that surgery was always a later option if this did not work. On the other hand I hate to think that I am just wasting time and could get the surgery and get it over with. If I were younger, surgery would be my first choice. Dave

I have had several knee surgeries, avoiding knee replacement at all cost. I am like Bruce I have no stability. with that being said. My buddy Jeff Long however choose the brace and therapy. He injured his knee last May, tore the meniscus and acl. He is still on crutches. Dave you might want too ask what time frame they are talking for the 2 options,

I had to have surgery they would not heal even if it hurts you got to walk for it to get better. They still hurt no cushion left but no replacement for me.

Tar it is scary how are lives mirror each other. I too have bone on bone, this cold weather lets me know I have made some poor decisions. I do hope Dave gets better quick.

I had a total knee replacement 2 years ago. Not a torn ACL.. just worm out and bone on bone. I put it off for years due to worries and others that had problems.(ACL torn will not repair itself, PT only strengthens the muscles to compensate for the tear). I asked around. A few told me about 3-D imaging knee replacement. I talked to the doctor that was well known in tbe area and HIGHLY recommended. After he looked at the x-rays, he confirmed I really needed it.
He then told me I would be back in the woods in 3 weeks, yeah... 3 weeks. I must have looked at him like he was crazy. So he then said, "You do your PT after surgery, I promise you will be".. I worked hard, but he was wrong..it was 3 weeks and 2 days, in 4" of snow, I cut a dog with my friend, Damon Shivers. Hunted 2 hours. At 4 weeks, I was doing hills, slowly, but doing hills. I went back to work at 6 1/2 weeks with no restrictions. My range of motion at 7 weeks(my last PT session)was 158°, formerly a 6 month goal.
I would do it all over again if the other needed it.

I am 71, pretty tough but would like to have full use of my knee again, just pondering my options. I am climbing stairs at my house without help, albeit slow and deliberate, I am able to walk slowly around the house and do things such as shower, etc by myself . Harleydan, I appreciate your post on the knee replacement and your recovery time, this has my attention. Dave

Do the replacement in my opinion. My Grandpa had both his done and his only complaint was that he didnt do them sooner. He was back in the woods ginseng digging within a month of having his last one done.

Good luck with your acl. I've had knee problems for a while. Went to a surgeon in late November hoping to have some type of surgery. He gave me a cortisone shot then and went back in late January. This time I got a cortisone shot in each knee and an injection of some type gell (lubricant) in each knee.Im not convinced that has helped much. Has anyone had the gell injected? Jr.Steelman

Thanks for the info Dave. I would suggest rehab and a brace. If those results don’t satisfy you, then go with the replacement.

They are making me a custom brace and that's what I am going to try first. It's refreshing to know that the knee replacement has such a quick recovery time, just in case the brace thing does not meet my needs. I could get the knee replaced this summer and be able to hunt this fall. Dave

That sounds good Dave. Rehab the heck out of it. Although knee replacement has come a long way, it’s no guarantee your knee will be like new again. I would give it a good 6 months to see how it’s going to do.
