6/7 months old phenoms

I’m in the process of starting a soon to be 7 month old pup that appears to not need training lol. It’s been a long time or maybe never that I’ve had one like this . He’s got a bazooka for a mouth , tears through the timber ,moves a track well and explodes on tree . He’s very intense doesn’t really play with other pups . He only wants to rough house with his daddy at times .Maybe I won’t mess him up but he’s sure got me excited .Time will tell but watch for Cold Traxx Man Style . I’ve gotta figure out how to post video or pics so I can post . It will be fun to document his progress or set backs . I am sure enjoying the Man dogs ,

He just might be the best dog you will ever own...I had one like that...I have had some pretty good ones but that one showed me he was going to be special at 8 weeks even though I didn’t realize it till he was a little older...at 4 months I was getting excited...he was a pleasure to hunt and he showed me the difference between himself and great dogs...there is a difference

I hope he does that for you because the great ones don’t come around often...

I'm sure glad I kept him . I delivered a littermate of his last night . We cut them loose and his brother knocked a hole in the dark and went half mile with his sire . Lol I had instant regret agreeing to part with him but I can focus more on Man Style . I have an older brother to him that's 4 that's a goodun also . I needed a freak to get me off the couch

Mike

Wish I had one like him to get me off the couch, I am just not interested in average dogs and that's all I have at the moment. Dave

I'd be out there now but it's raining sideways . Lol I guess I have added incentive with this pup. I own the sire and dam. I raised a litter out of Extra Man 4 years ago and Man Child the one I kept has done his share of winning and has that big mouth . Now I've made another cross that will take me to retirement . This is a great sport whether you competition hunt or not . The arguments turn me off in the hunts but I still try and champion my dogs . I'm excited to see how Man Style finishes out .

I just got in form hunting a little female. I've released two coons for her last week and she treed both. That's all she's ever seen. Tonight she trailed a coon about 350 yds got him going for another 150 yards and treed him. I've been hunting for 60 years and I've never seen a pup with that little experience trail a coon that far and tree it. She'll be 7 months on Sunday.

This is true. Most will hit a lull at some point, providing that you demand accuracy, and correct them for inaccuracy. That's a process that you have to work through.

Congratulations. You have found one of the true joys of coon hunting. That is owning a young pup that seems like all you have to do is point him in the right direction and give him an opportunity. The advancement of those type of pups have to be thought about and overlooked, just like one that frustrates you. It is just easier and more fun. Because he pup brings so much to the table. Don't think it can overcome everything it will be exposed to on its own. With these type of pups the most important interaction may not come from you having to encourage or discourage. It may be just exposing the pup to the right conditions that will allow it to mature without environmental influence setting him back. If it is too hot or too cold that only an experienced hound should be hunting. Don't hunt the pup that night. There will be plenty of nights in the future for him to be exposed the the harshest conditions. If the water gets too deep or the conditions to dry. Instead of taking him and allowing him to pick up bad habits do to his drive and determination. Its best to find another location to hunt. Keep it simple for him. With maturity he will be able to handle all those things. With inexperience they may only allow him to pick up bad habits. Have fun and enjoy him.

I have had two or three that treed coons by themselves at 6-8 months old, and never got any better after they were 14-18 months old.

But, Just because they didn't get any better as they got older does not mean they were not nice dogs when they got older.

I am pretty confident that my Con dog was the best one year old on the planet. He is 4 now, and has not changed a bit. Which is fine because he is still a pretty dang good. I would rather a dog peak at 8 months than 3 years old, but that is just me.

Pups

How they start has a lot to do with how they finish imo once they get in the well started stage you've seen 90 percent of what you have. One of the hardest hunters I knew told me they don't get much better after being started good and I found this to be true only running type pups with alot of drive and desire will change much if any imo . Ninety percent of all of them are common,a stage dog's at best sounds like you a nice cross here

To all you folks saying our pups won't get any better, I'm fine with that. She was released one time, she struck one track and treed one coon. If she does that for the next 10 years, I'm satisfied.

Don't let anyone tell you those special pups won't get better and better with age, most folks never get to see a truly special pup. The ones that I called special made special coon dogs with age. Not everyone knows what a diamond in the rough look like, much less how to polish it until it shines the brightest. Now with average dogs they just don't get better, they stay about the same ( like mine ) . Lol. Dave

I’ve been starting and training hounds for 36 years . I’ve seen some fizzle. Never made a dime off dogs . I’ve spent a bunch lol. Good dogs die of old age at my house . Most guys sell them off as soon as they are three and one half. I look forward to spending the time if he turns out to be a dud he won’t end up on the board and become someone else’s trouble . A good prospect makes you want to get in the timber. I’m sure not worried about him having tools at a young age . I’d hate to have to feed one a while for them to show interest .

I would much rather have a 9 month old dog running a deer and trying to tree coon then waiting until he was 2 to start.

Good luck to you and your pup, sounds like he is the kind of dog we are all looking for. I have never trained pups, but have had the privilege of seeing a few like you have. They are SPECIAL and make the kind of coon dogs we all are looking for, the few that I have seen made what I call a coon dog. You must be proud as a peacock to have one like this out of your dogs. Best of everything to you as you begin a new coon dogs journey, it just takes time. I bet you will have a great time with this pup. Dave

Dogs like that don't need training, all they need is turned loose.
