Breeding Cycles

I've observed as the female gets older they ovulate, egg drop, later in the cycle. Never Gone progesterone test showed proper breeding from day 12 when Penney was 3 years old to day 22 when 8 years old. She would accept a male dog from day 10 through day 23. She always conceived with litter sizes of 11, 9,10,8, 6.

Twelve-fourteen days is considered "normal" or average. But you have to have a bunch of females that ovulate sooner and later to get an average. I have seen 9-21 days. And live, not frozen, sperm can live in the uterus for up to 4 days so you can live breed a female and 4 days later she can ovulate and still get pregnant. Just because you live breed a female on a certain day doesn't mean that is the day she gets pregnant. You have to progesterone test and be experienced at reading the results from each lab as they can vary. Dean Bitzell did his own progesterone testing and was very good at it. He will really be missed by a lot of breeders.

I had a Walker female that had to be bred on the 5th day. It took me a while to get that figured out.

Just more proof that not all females are the same !!
Most people treat dogs as a "group" rather than INDIVIDUALS when breeding , feeding and even training.

Richard is right , its all about progesterone levels . Ovulation and even whelping date.
