Which would you rather be leading out if the woods

3 dog cast. $kc. 2 dogs strike and carry the track for 45 mins of one hour hunt. The third dog strikes in for 50. He gets treed with a coon. Strikes back in for 25. He gets treed again on a den. Strikes back in again for 25. He gets treed again with a coon. Strikes back in again for 25. Other 2 dogs get treed after 45 mins. Other dog trees again. Go to the 2 dogs and they are on a den but coon is seen. Go to the dog on his 4th tree and its slick. Hunt over. One of the dogs on the 45 min track wins cast..

Now I'm really confused. Some prefer a slick treer to a winner.

Donald

Yep, when they win like described, lol. Give me a 4 tree over 1 tree dog anytime. 1 slick , 2 coons seen and a den tree vs 1 tree in 1 hour, bust his chops on slick tree. Lol. Dave

Just another example of how the best dog doesn’t always win in an hour hunt and why strike points are over rated! And now with the 1 hour hunts in UKC it doesn’t matter what registry you use as an example.

Hold up I’m not saying change the rules he ask a simple question which dog you would prefer, I myself in my own opinion prefer that one that made the slick. He sound pretty quick at what he done and sounds like a dog that just needs a consistent dog man behind him!! That one that struck first stayed out of trouble but also stayed on the ground to long for my liking.
If the dogs are around the same age, I’d take the loser of this cast and be bask to see you in about 90 days

I like a winner. I would be proud to lead the dog that took the first track that it came to and worked to put a coon at the end of it. I would want to lead her out of the woods and collect my money. She stayed with her track and trailed it up while Ol Speedy was running around making trees.

I sure do wish that I lived where you could make and score 5 trees in an hour.

Best choice. Anyone that says their dogs never slick? Well.. You know... Had it been a 90 minute hunt, what's the odds old treer would have put another one or 2 up? And when you are tuning up.. How many only hunt an hour?
Taking the 4 tree dog. Hands down

If it takes 45 minutes for a dog to tree, it didn’t get struck on a coon track. And if it did, than it stood on its head way to long to figure it out. I’ll take the 4 trees in an hour and roll the dice any night.

Which One?

All these different answers and opinions... I like this and I don't like this. These are the very reasons I just pleasure hunt anymore. The only person I have to listen to is me because I'm the only one there!

Kinda like hunting a dog by itself, it is always the best dog.

And a dead loner. How good is it? Don't have 3 dogs pushing to find it first.. Just all alone... Deep. Away from the competition...

The babble deep and lonely dogs win hunts because the rules allow it. But make no mistake about it coming from an old fat kid that knows the difference. They don't have to have as many tools in their toolbox to win as the dogs we had in the 3 hr hunt days. Blow deep find a hot pop up wins a lot of hunts nowadays. One little ole kitten up a bush will win you big $$$.

Turned loose this morning at 3 am, tread 2 on the outside, recut the 3rd time, she hit a old frosted over track, she took it out of the woods across 400 +yards of heavy frosted pasture and treed with the meat. Don't know how long it took her but it wasn't fast. I was way more proud of the last tree.

Hunting alone

My female leaves the truck hunting. If game is moving she can usually get struck in 3 to 4 hundred yards. Last Friday night I beeped her back at a half mile. She's a Stephens Walker cross. Put her with my Leopard male and they hunt the same way. She may hunt a little better by herself than he does.

Not Sure???

Ron gave us a scenario and I'm assuming he was on the hunt. For me to make a good judgment I would have liked to have been on the hunt. I think we all can agree that we like a dog that gets things done fast and is busy which sounds like dog #3. That being said, all we know is the other dogs took 45 minutes to tree a coon. I will give another example that happened back in the late 80's while judging at an RQE in Indiana. 3 dog cast, black dog, English dog and Redbone. The Red dog opened 3 times and the 8 minutes got him, (100 minus). The Black and English had 2 trees during this hunt by themselves. No coon was seen although the owner of the Black dog tried many times to show me spider eyes, lol, so circle points. At any rate, Red, (Melton's Fireball II) struck in with about 20 minutes left and went on to finish it and showed us a coon. Meanwhile, Black and English got into Red's tree in time and collected their points. Red, 200+, 100- =100+. Black, 150+, 0-, and English, 100+,0-. Now, if you hadn't been there and saw 1st hand what happened you wouldn't know what happened or maybe you may have drawn a different conclusion. On that particular night, watching all 3 dogs from a neutral position, I believe the Red dog looked better although he appeared to do the least. He made one mistake and it bit him in the butt. Sometimes less is more. Oh, BTW, I got judge the Black dog again in the World and he didn't fair nearly as well. The handler was much harder to take than the dog, LOL! I'm sure everyone out there has had these types of situations happen and it's just hard to swallow sometimes.
