I spectated my second hunt last night and had such a fun time. Didn’t even get back to the clubhouse till like 3:30 cause we couldn’t get our dogs. The one thing though was I must’ve gotten mosquito bit a hundred times last night. That and the little gnats and stuff flying up your nose and ears they were driving me crazy. There was a lot of standing water we were wading through so that’s what i think was going on. Next time I’ll definitely put some bug spray on, but i know in the past when the bugs are really thick they’ll get past my bug spray and I’ll still end up getting bit just not as bad. So I was wondering if you guys had any good tricks for avoiding them besides the bug spray since you’ve all been out in the woods for a ton of nights.

In addition to sprays I carry a mosquitoe head net to keep them away from my head .

Does that 100% deet work pretty good? That’s another thing which sprays do you guys like the best? I know for fishing I used the OFF I think it’s called and it worked pretty good but it seems like if you don’t cover one little inch of your body theyll find it and get you.

Dog Whisper that’s not a bad idea that’s where they all were getting my face my neck and my shoulders. Might have to wear one if I’m going through a lot of standing water but I’m worried it might get in the way. Thanks for that though that’s smart I didn’t think about that

Just make sure that the net has a draw string at the bottom...
It's easy on .. easy off and tucked in a pocket when not in use.

Buy Listerine Mouthwash and put it in a cheap spray bottle. Spray it on and around your neck, hands, face, clothes. It will keep mosquitos and about anything else off. Try it, it works

Yes you can dilute it down and it is still strong enough to do the job.

101! Tell us about the hunt. How the dogs do? What breeds? Did you trip and fall? The good stuff buddy we know there are bugs. LoL!! I carry 2 or 3 different brands. One of them usually works. Get small cans/bottles for ease of care. Here in the North I stock up after camping season.

It was awesome it was a pretty far ride from the club house about an hour, we got there and saw a deer so they turned their dogs out on the other side of the road, it was two walker dogs and a red bone. I think not 100% sure both walkers struck pretty quick, one was called treed I think but he wasn’t so he got minused. The other one was never called trees and he was basically just out barking the whole time, I thought after a certain amount of time once they’re struck they get minused but I don’t think he ever re struck his dog? Anyways we start trying to get closer to them cause they all were getting pretty far away but it’s all really deep standing water so we had to take a road that swung us way out and as we were walking it the redbone and the walker that was called treed both got struck and treed. They were way in there so we followed the road for most of the hunt, lots of puddles in the tire ruts but we got close and got off the road then had to wade through the swamp it was like real swamp really cool but a pain because the little cypress stumps stick out and you run into em and mess up your knees.

We get to the dogs and they’re both treed barking and we shined the tree for a while but didn’t see any coon although it was hard to tell cause it was a pretty tall one with a branch in the way but I guess because they didn’t see any den they couldn’t circle it not sure what that means though? They had to minus it. By then there wasn’t much time left because it was such a far walk but we let the dogs go a second time and got confused on the time and realized we had only like ten minutes left so the hunt was over and we had to get the dogs so we started walking that way.

We got close to the dogs but they were split apart just running not treed, so it was after the hunt so we could separate so I went with the judge who gave me the ride mr bellemore, and the two walker dog owners the guide and another guy went to get their dogs. Me and the judge went down the one road a little ways but then his dog started to go towards the road we were just on so we had to backtrack and go back to where we were and continue up that road. We went up it a little bit and got close to the dog but he turned and went back to the road we were just on! So we traced back again and got to that road and his gamin said the dog was close in front and then all the sudden I hear a noise and the dog runs right up the side of us. So the judge grabs the dog and leashes him up and let’s me handle him which I was really excited about. We walked for a long ways and tried to get back to the main road and boy it was deep and long. We tried to go around some of the puddles but some we couldn’t and they were like 2 inches from the top of my boots. Then I was walking along the side of a really deep one with the dog and all the sudden I felt water and I was hip deep in water. Luckily it wasn’t too cold so I just got back up and kept going. I emptied my boots and we kept on going ahead, and we still probably had a mile to get back to the truck.

Then all the sudden we see some lights and a truck came and thought we were stuck but we just told em we were coon hunting. We did ask for a ride cause they wanted to help us so we got in the back with the dog and they took us back to the truck which was so nice of them cause it would have been a ways. By then it was a little after 1 and the rest of our cast was still out there with one of their trucks. We waited for a little while but decided to leave and get cell service to call. We got to the highway and I called my parents who were waiting at the clubhouse and the judge spoke to the hunt director and explained the situation that they could be stuck or who knows and we got no way of knowing. We went up the road and as a kind of lucky thing tried to call the guide who was still out there with the other guy and he actually answered and explained that they got their dogs and had just gotten out. So we drove back to the clubhouse but I accidentally fell asleep I didn’t want to but I started seeing stuff I was so tired. We got to the clubhouse and my parents picked me up and brought me home.

Overall I had an awesome time it was a lot more adventurous then my first time I had more excitement last night then in a long time. Parents still don’t want to get me a dog yet but I’m closer to winning them over

101. Yep you enjoyed it. Keep working on your parents. You need to prove to them you are responsible enough to care for your dog. Work out situations with them. Like where would be the best place for kennel. Or if dog needs to be kept inside how you would handle that. 50 years ago I was trying to talk my parents into letting me get a dog. I had coon hunting neighbors. So I was coon hunting Friday and Saturday nights.

Oh yea I’ve been trying, it’s hard cause we’ve already got two dogs. They told me they want me to spectate some more hunts but they won’t give me a number of how many before I can get a dog. I think having the dog outside has been ruled out by then so it’ll have to be an inside dog. I just hope the dog will still hunt good with living inside

I was kinda in the same boat as you last year (18 and living with parents). I was persistent and ended up getting a pup lol. It sounds like you need a well behaved dog for your situation so id think getting a puppy and training it behaviorial wise to meet your parents standards would be your best bet. Good luck

Deep woods sportsman will be your best friend ! 40 % deet at walmart . I carry a book bag I keep a machete benadryl first aid kit coon squall extra ammo back up light and batteries . And most importantly I keep a bottle of water for me and the hounds . It gets hot here and sometimes you are aways from the truck and not always in a swamp .

When you buy bug spray look at the deet content. The more deet the better it works. Be careful. Deet will eat the finish off wood and melt plastic. Be cateful what you handle with it on your hands. What cluo where you at?

Here in Oklahoma the only thing that really works for mosquitoes is something with deet. For the buffalo gnats deet is useless. Vanilla extract or Skin So Soft from Avon will work for gnats.

Peter, once the bug spray dries. It doesn't damage the surfaces you touch.

Let me share a coon hunting family with you. Back many years ago there use to be a young man that was about 15 at the time. Just about every hunt I went to in S. Ga he was there hunting. His Mom would drive him to the hunt. Drive him to the woods and while he was out there winning the cast. She was reading a book in the truck. The young man is probably now in his 30's and has a family of his own. He has had some top dogs and has raised some fine litters of pups over the years. His Father also hunts and does a find job at it also. Funny that over the years I have went into the clubhouse of several large hunts around the county and I have seen on a table some jackets and items showing someone has their spot at a table picked out. If I ever saw a book, I knew they were there. Some of you in the South might know who I am talking about. Matt Marchant and his Dad Jarvis.

I don't get skeet bit much anyway, but I use deluted permethrin 10 on the outside of my clothes to keep them out of my face & ears. They say i don't get bit because I'm O- blood type.
