I was just sitting here thinking about hunting back when I was a kid thru my teenage years. All the land we had to hunt but coons were thin , We skinned everything we shot out opossums or coons and sold them at a fur buyer in Dalton Ga .man that place stunk. Now days a lot of people just shoot coons out and leave them there where the dog chewed on them till they die, There are a lot more coons but a lot less places to hunt. No fur buyer that I know of around here. Thats one of the reasons I dont shoot them . if your not able to do something or going to do something with them why kill them . I understand training a young dog but I dont understand the waste.

happens alot here and it hurts the hunting for sure as coons are thin anyways. guys with older seasoned dogs shooting everything they tree.
its called SELFISHNESS and GREED ........ that which has been going on for a LONG TIME.

1 they are not near as many coon hunters has there used to be , 2 there are lots of coons , if we do not manage them God or Mother Nature will through disease , 3 I carry my coons back either 1/4 them up and smoke em for dog treats , the rest goes in the compost bin or they get used for bait for my coyote traps I wage an undeclared war on those suckers. 4 I never shoot more than 1 coon out of a tree and rarely more than 2 in a night even if we tree 5-7. JMHO

I clean every coon I catch. Now days, I keep the meat and throw away the hide. I can't abide killing something and letting it rot, other than a dillar or yote.

Opinions on whether to kill and how many to kill has always and will always depend solely on where you live.

I've never understood why it is considered acceptable to shoot and leave lay one animal while it is wrong to do the same with another.

Since Bud Keller passed away several years ago, I don't think there's a fur buyer in this area even anymore.

Only reason I ever skinned anything was for an excuse to go make my yearly catch up visit with him anyway.

Hide hunting is a thing of the past for now I'm afraid WJoey.. Sadly i've been hunting with a couple of young guys as of late who have never sold a coon hide.. Hoping to change that for them this year as I'm putting up a portion of my seasons catch and a couple of theirs and will ship them to Canada..

I live in Northtern, IN and we are blessed with a strong coon population. I've killed just over 130 coons this fall with my pup.. Several folks in the area have killed far more than me and there is no negative impact to the overall population. I absolutely can't stand to waste a coon, but on some of the farms I hunt I'm required to take them all, and it won't hurt a thing.

Shoot you can still cut our local state ground and tree coons within a hundred yards of the road at times.. And that ground has been pounded since Nov 8th.. There is so much ground you can't access that there is a steady flow of fresh coons into areas you thin them out of to take up the denning sites you free up when you take one..

I hunted southern lower MI about 20 nights in Oct and they have more coon than we do. Multiple times we had three dogs split all having a coon, was a rodeo early when the litters were still together.. Ma Nature will reduce the coon population as it's too high and then we will start from a very low level and build up again.

a $15.00 average on coon would sure help the situation.. Not high enough to drag a bunch of new folks into the sport just for the money, but would insure the resource is managed better and utilized properly..

Looks like we are done here as of today for a bit.. Finally wintering in and me and the dog are ok taking a break.. Well at least I am!!

I can’t tell someone how many coon they should take. It all depends on location about what percentage of coon should be took or how many to leave. As has been mentioned if they are not controlled disease will come in and will not be nearly as kind taking a few. Distemper is probally the biggest threat when they are over populated. As far as people saying the only way they can hunt certain ground is to kill them all. I would call bs you kill them al because that’s what you want to do. Is the landowner with you all night maybe maybe not. You could take as many as you want or think as needed if the landowner asks just tell them you’ve been taking a bunch.

Sticking with the original post, I have also seen a large decline in hunting land. Here in WV we have so much land that is posted and mostly for deer hunters. I deer hunt and love to do it but some folks just aren't informed on how little a hound impacts deer hunting. I can't count the times my hounds have treed and I've seen deer bedded within 50 yards of the tree and paying no attention to the dogs. Most hounds now days are naturally straight on coon and if not are easily broken from fast game. That's just one problem. The most enjoyable time in my coon hunting life was when I skinned and sold fur. It made it fun and it also told you what kind of hound you were packing. It absolutely kills me to leave a nice coon lay in the woods but I occasionally do. It's like dropping a valuable piece of hunting equipment and walking away while looking it. I only have one young female that I am hunting now and it doesn't bother me to leave a coon up a tree but not all of them. We have a fairly good supply of coon where I live but not nearly as good as where I used to live in North Central IN. I was fortunate enough to live in IN during the fur boom and I bought my kid's Christmas with the fur money more than once. In short, I miss the good ole days!

That is pretty much how I see it also, I will only kill a few coon and skin them out. Trying something new this year sending some into get tanned will try to sell a few for wall hangings at the local bow shop and range. I worked 10 years for the County Environmental Dept. and we collected and shipped rabies specimens for rabies testing. There has been an increase in calls and shipping over those ten yrs that tell me the fox and coon populations need controlled. So that is why I still hunt and skin some fur, reminds me of the old days and old ways.

This season I meet a BUTCHER that traps on the side....
We struk up a barter ....I give him my coons and he gives me offal...includeing knuckle/femur bones.....pound for pound it's not even close
A whole coon weighs 9-20 lb...while offal of a cow can weigh
100 + lbs......
I pkup 400 lbs of offal at a time...... the hounds love it and my feed bill is nile.
I had to invest in a freezer just to accommodate all the ground up offal I make for the dogs.
