2019 Black and Tan Yearbook

Hello All,

Last night, August 16th, the board of directors had our monthly meeting to discuss several different topics. The main topic of discussion was our great yearbook and it's associated cost. The board voted for the 2019 yearbook to return to it's original soft cover form for the main reason of cost savings. During the last couple of years we have seen a reduction of our finances by 24.4% and the hard cover is approximately $6500.00 more expensive than the original soft cover.
The board is overwhelmingly sad to vote to return to the original soft cover but with less membership numbers and with less folks buying advertisements we felt the hard cover was a cost that the association needed to save.
Now, with all this being said, if we as an association can get our membership numbers up and our yearbook advertisement numbers up, it is our hope that at some point we can return to our hard cover in the future.
Financially, the American Black and Tan Association is as strong as any breed organization of any registry in the country but it is our duty as the board to make the tough decisions that will continue to keep us the Premier breed organization in the country for now and for years to come.

Your Fellow Black and Tan Follower,
Chad Smith, ABTCHA Vice President

Strong

Dear board members; thank you for making a tough decision and keeping us strong financially. We all love the hard bound covers but we trust you in making the right calls to keep us strong. Great Job!! Dale and Pam Sandell

the board never voted to change from soft to hard originally . One person just did it on their own. The hard copy is really nice but i always wondered how in the world the association could cover those expenses.

One person never made the change. A suggestion was made to change from the soft to a hard back cover in a meeting. The cost of doing the hard back cover was looked at and approved by the board that it could be done. And for years it had been.

Now no one is advertising like they use to anymore for several reasons.

1. Several people have passed on they would have put an ad in.
2. Several people thank they must have a titled dog to advertise it.
3. Social Media is big
4. Some people forget to send it in. Which is baffles my mind, because you feed that dog/dogs everyday and you know the yearbook comes out every year and when ads need to be sent in.

I hope and pray that our membership numbers come back up and that people start advertising more like in the past. Because I hated the soft covers because they wear over time. The hard back cover was my idea as well as doing color ads.

Lets continue to support this great breed to leaps and bounds over the rest.

The hard cover was a great improvement to an already great book. Its too bad that there is no financial way to keep it hard covered.

When i was on the board the change was made by one person and it was never voted on. The covers were already in the works when we were notified

I’d pay an extra $5 per year to keep the hard cover.

Matt FYI you were elected to the board in May 2011 @ bnt days. The 2011 yearbook was a hard cover. The change was made prior year before you was on the board. So there was no Change made the years you was on the board it was just confirmed that the covers were being done and taken care of.

I’m losing it with my old age...... I just remember that there was going to be close to a 9-10k charge and I didn’t know how we were going to recoup that money

Matt I disagree with you on this. I believe it is that with age you start having a lot more fun and enjoying life and time goes by a lot faster. Wait till you get my age you will agree with me, time goes by a lot faster not because you forget things but because you are enjoying a lot more of life. The older you get there are less hours in a day and less days in a year. lol

Lovis I am not sure if these are answers or questions or suggestions but I will post on my thoughts on all of these sometime today as if they were questions or suggestions.

I will be the first to admit on your number 2 that I fall in this category not just in titled dogs but dogs that are running the TRL as well. I had 2 people at BNT days this year say it isn't just for advertising stud dogs or pups. It is a yearbook for the members by the members just put a 1/4 page add with a picture of your family or you don't even need a picture just so when members look through the book they will know you are still out there hunting an enjoying it.

Lovis The board looked at it then and agreed it could be done, it could still be done today, it will just take a lot more work. The first year 2011 of the Hard Cover we had 1225 members at the end of 2010, we also that 1st year had 90 full pages of black and white adds and 36 pages of color. These full pages included half page and quarter page adds I just counted them as full pages. Could have been 4 quarter page adds on one page I just counted them as 1 page. End of 2017 we had 876 members. 2018 yearbook we had 41 pages color adds and 37 pages black and white. Again I counted pages some of these had 4 quarter page adds on that page. A year ago we had 52 color adds and 47B&W. So if you look at the adds in the year book this year there was probably a 100 members or so that put in an add. That left about 775 that didn't, including me. So if we could get half of those that didn't to put a quarter page in the year book this could very well cover the extra cost of the hard cover. But it needs to be worked!

Now no one is advertising like they use to anymore for several reasons.

1. Several people have passed on they would have put an ad in.

We are sadden by the ones passing on, as you and I both know this isn't something we can control as a higher power has control over this. What we do have is a very active youth program which will help to keep this sport alive. Not saying they will keep the BNT breed alive as is the normal pattern the youth go off to college or get into the work force and coon hunting is a small part of their life for 10yrs or so. What we need to do as a breed is to attract those 25 to 40 yr old's that come back into the sport. These are the people that will promote the breed buy memberships and adds year after year. The sport is changing and if the BNT Assoc. membership of the BNT Breed doesn't want to change they will be left behind. They don't need to change what they are hunting, breeding or promoting but as the saying goes times are changing if you don't change they will be left behind. Take a look at this springs SS winners, everyone of those owner/handlers were leading BNT's 5, 10 and 15yrs ago. These are the guys that buy up adds every year and as an Assoc. we should want them back.

2. Several people thank they must have a titled dog to advertise it.

I already commented on this earlier.

3. Social Media is big

It is big but unless you are on it 24/7 it is here today gone tomorrow. If they want advertisement of their dogs remembered the Yearbook reaches all members an is at your finger tips when ever you want it and doesn't go away. We can also use social media to improve the add out put but it is only good if it is followed up with a phone call for adds otherwise it is forgotten.

4. Some people forget to send it in. Which is baffles my mind, because you feed that dog/dogs everyday and you know the yearbook comes out every year and when ads need to be sent in.

Guess I am not sure about this one. LOL

I hope and pray that our membership numbers come back up and that people start advertising more like in the past. Because I hated the soft covers because they wear over time. The hard back cover was my idea as well as doing color ads.

Membership numbers have dropped quite a lot from 10yrs ago. We are down over 500 members from ending year 2007 to the end of 2017. Iowa in 2007 had 37 members 2017 they had 9 in 2010 Iowa had over 50. Arkansas has doubled their membership 2007 to 2017. The 4 largest membership States in 2007 have dropped memberships by 40, 50 and 65%. I have sent a chart of the membership decline to all officers and board members, was curious why their was such a decline in some of the States that used to be very strong an in the Heart of the Heartland. Maybe some of you reading this could have an idea why an give solutions that might help to get those numbers back up.

Lovis I will say the 2008 cover is the only one of my soft covers that isn't torn or ripped off an most of the others also have pages missing because once the cover goes slowly others get torn as well..

Lets continue to support this great breed to leaps and bounds over the rest.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions how we can improve add participation, membership or anything else you want to talk about the breed as a whole my number is posted below, and contact info under the post 2018 officers and board contact.

I guess I'm different than some. When I was treasurer for three years , the association sat on about $60k and it's been that way for years give or take a few thousand. I know what bills have to be paid and were the money goes. I just don't understand why a nonprofit organization needs that kinda money. Spend the dang money if you got it. Guess that's why I'm not on the board anymore. 😂

Just to share the Love of these good Ole Blackdogs,, OOO did I mention to lie to each other about our dogs,,LOL, The Old YEARBOOK has made me lots of friends and I Thank God for them everyday Have a Blessed One ,,,RON
