Ivomec to treat Sarcoptic Mange

Has anyone had luck treating mange with ivomec? I know the heartworm preventative dose of ivomec is 1/10th cc for up to 100 pounds. 1/10th cc per 10 pounds for intestinal worms. I believe the correct dosage for treating Sarcoptic Mange is approximately 1 1/2 times the intestinal worming dosage. Correct me if I’m wrong. Also any other better/quicker remedies are welcome.

I rescued a hound that had cancer ear and mange bad. The vet had me give her Ivomec every day for 30 days I think. I can't remember the dosage but it was much higher than the 1 tenth cc per 10 lbs that use monthly. I am afraid to say how much but do remember looking at him and saying "are you sure"? It did work very well.

I just treated a female a hunting buddy of Chey's had got last week. She is already looking a ton better. I wouldn't let him get her off his tailgate lol, it was bad. I gave her a 1ml of ivermectrin, a Nexgard tablet and put her on sulfatrimethazone to help with whatever compromised her immune system to let the mange mite flourish. They make different shampoos some are sulfur based other peroxide The most important is probably the Nexgard or you could use Bravecto both will kill the mite that is causing the issue. Most dogs have skin mites and if the immune system gets down they can get out of control causing hair loss along with bald patches, bumps and sores. Watch doing large or prolonged doses of ivomec it can cause toxic poisoning and some serious problems.

Jen, I am pretty sure that it was 1 cc per day that the vet had me give her for 30 days. Seemed extreme and I'm not saying anyone should do it but we cured the mange and got the ear cancer also though we treated the ear cancer with something else also. He said a dog can handle a lot of Ivomec but I don't know.

I can remember back in the day giving it every few days for a month.
I've seen guys give them to much and them go temporarily blind. With the new pills out now a days that kill the mite I really don't think the ivomec needs to be given but I gave the one the other day some anyway. We need to ask doc on here.

cure

had one get it from some other dogs...

mix:
2 cups 3% hydrogen peroxide
4 cups warm/hot water
3 heaping tablespoons of borax

take a sponge and give the dog a sponge bath daily for a minimum of three days.

I gave mine until I seen no more sign of mange (10 days), she lost her hair on her belly, but it grows back. I even cleaned her ears with the solution!!

She looks great now, even her ears are clear of any dirt at all!!

I put a seresto collar on her as it says it prevents the sarcoptic mite from doing damage

Several years ago I traded for a beagle that had some red mange showing on it. I took a small plastic bucket and poured some Povidone iodine in it and then squirted some (don't remember how much) probably a cc or two of ivomev in it. Soaked a rag in it and just mopped the dog real good with it. It did a good job.

I am sorry for incorrect spelling. My dog did not have ear cancer but ear canker. Just realized what I had written. I'll blame it on being old.

Sometimes a young dog will get over the red mange on their own when they get older. Their immune system gets stronger. The ivomec daily for a month sometimes works but could cause problems according to my vet.

had a vet tell me once if too much Ivomec would have killed a dog he would have figured that out a long time ago

Thanks for the responses! Has anyone ever tried coating the hair and skin with grease or oil? I’ve heard that from a few older guys that swear by it.

Simparica is all you need now for mites. One dose kills Demodex and Sarcoptes mites.

Burnt motor oil is what you used before we had Simparica. Now you can't get it. People change their oil a lot sooner and cars burn a lot cleaner so there isn't any sulphur in it.

I'm a Simparica fan. Years ago, about 4-5 years before Ivomec, I had to cull an outstanding young hound because of mange. I would think I had him cured but if I stressed him by hunting it would come back. He couldn't stand going thru cold water. Today it wouldn't be anything to cure him.
