March and April - best hunting of the year in my opinion for the Midwest
April is almost half way gone and I am missing it already. Been an awfully cold March and April, but the coon hunting has been outstanding. Even on the cold and frosty nights we've had so many of this year the coon moved well. Very few bad nights where the dog had to go much past 400-500 yards to get struck.
Coons are concentrated around the woods ponds here and you can get a young dog on a lot of coons most nights. I've only hunted past midnite a few times so can't comment on the later hours movement,
Ole Big Iron doesn't want to quit, but his old handler is whooped after a few hours. Cut 4 times in a section the other night working on recasting after a treed coon and ended up a mile from the dad gum truck on the last one and way to late to call Momma to come pick us up. That's coon hunting .
No deer hunters, plenty of private ground to hunt now, coon are concentrated on the frogs and it's game on for another two weeks.
Then we wait for the mulberries and then for the corn.. Good times ahead for us!! Just wish we could avoid the skeeters that are sure to come!!
Have been laid up with the flu the last three nights, some of the best darn it.. But me and the dog needed a break. Last night was the first he made a peep at dark in the kennel. Sick or not, we are going to roll tonight, just hope it's not too far.. Second round of the flu for me this year and this stuff sucks!!
Hope you all have had great hunting and good times as well.
