I’ve got my first coon dog, I’ve never trained one before. So my Bluetick pup is 6 months old, for about 3 months I have been letting him track scent trails made with a coon skin and store bought coon scent. I do a training session 2 to 3 times a week. He has been doing alright with the tracking and he will tree the skin when he finds it. But recently he seems to be getting impatient and not wanting to follow the trail or maybe he can’t find the trail. I have a very small property with limited spots to hang up the skin so he just runs to all of the trees and looks instead of tracking now. My other thought is that this new brand of scent I bought doesn’t lay a good trail. I haven’t been able to get him out in the woods much because he used to get car sick very easy. I now have a friend that has an experienced coon dog and a farm with lots of coons around. Should I continue to use a scent drag or just forget that and let him run with an experienced dog to find the real thing? Thanks in advance for reading my long story and helping out a beginner.

As far as trying to run with a grown dog its very very important they are old enough and mature enough to keep up. Because if they are not it will encourage lots and lots babbling in the future. As far as working with a hide and stuff, let him tell you. Give it a few weeks and try it again and see how he reacts. Maturity is everything.

If it were me hes old enough to train him to all of this now take him and lead on a dog string get that done first because he will fight you and you will have to drag him alot and make sure you have a good leash because hes guna try and fight kicking and screaming but it will be ok keep going on till he learns to walk with you. Then start teaching him to come to you when you call his name so he knows your call. Then the fun of water training go find a deep ditch full of water that you can cross but make sure its wide enough that he cant just jump it walk him on the lead to it hes not going to want to cross but try calling his name a couple times first if he doesnt come pull him in make sure he swims to you then go back to the other side and do it again make sure you pet him up when he does good start out twice the first time then more each time until you walk to it and he just comes across with out any hesitation. Start with one then move to two then three dont do all at once slow and steady with alot of patience then around 9 to 10 months start carrying to the woods

the pup is using his eyes instead of his nose. that will not help him in the long run matter a fact it may have already set him back. when ya lay a drag there is no need to hang the hide, after all he won't be able to see a real coon in the tree. nose power.

I wasn’t very clear...on the last day of the pup dragging the leash around...you pick up the leash and show the pup the treat to keep his focus on you and he will follow you around...so he is practically leash trained...

Mock hunts are good but you don’t want to overdo them...

Thanks Reuben. I used the method you described a while back and it worked great. He’s pretty good on a leash now. I appreciate your help. When teaching a pup to come when called, what do you do if they don’t come? Go get them?

I think about it before I call...if the chances are he won't come I will not call him...if more than likely he will come then I call...pet them up good and give a treat now and then...

when I let the pups out of the pen I let them run and play and when they are a little bored I call and pet them...

most the time when I step out of the garage or back door they come running to me...I make sure to give them some attention each time so they will come to me...when they are running to me I call them to me...just taking advantage of an opportunity in front of me...I have learned over the years that training is minimal for me when it pertains to my pups and dogs...

all good answers, back when I started we didn't have internet , lol
I didn't have nobody to help or dog to train my free pup with.. that was when "where the red fern grows" came out in the theaters ,took about 6 months before I could buy a vhs copy at the movie rentals,,
I about wore the tape out watching and learning all I could and billy coleman taught me how to train a walker dog using redbones,,lol, I can hear them laughing now....
it works on all breeds if they have anything between their ears besides air..

lot of information in that movie,, just don't hang the hide on the frount porch...

if you don't have the movie ,should be able to get it and the part 2 one at walmart , kids will like it too and it will also teach some life values to the kids without them knowing till they seen the whole movie..

Hey wildbill, thanks for the input. Funnily enough the reason why I decided to get into coon hunting was because I watched where the red fern grows! Haha I saw the movie and went out and bought me a Bluetick. Then I found a coon hunting club near by. The first hunt I went to just to join the club. It’s a very small club made up mostly of old timers that have been coon hunting since they were my age (I’m 19). Coon hunting isn’t as popular where I live as it is other places so one of the guys at the club asked me: “what made you want to get into coon hunting?” And I replied “I watched where the red fern grows. It looked like a lot of fun.” Haha they couldn’t believe it, they were surprised I could even find the little club, they apparently hadn’t had a new member in a long time.

I started coonhunting around 1972, a friend of a friend of my dads had too many dogs and my dad asked me if I wanted one ,heck yes was my answer, I found a old carbide light in the basement of the old farmhouse we lived in and went to the hardware store and got carbide and a cap for it and cleaned out a hand lotion bottle with a squirt top to carry water in and got a square 6volt flashlight with a haystring shoulder strap for spoting the trees and I was hooked for life.
im down to 11 walker dogs now,,lol at one time I had over 45 hounds/puppys , all breeds till I figured out what worked best for me,, that was the joe house bloodlines crossed with old finley river blood...my present walker dogs carry house clint/////tomtom blood 33 plus times .
good luck with whatever works for you,, I used to have blueticks with the hammer bloodlines but they would rip the hides to shreds if more than one got ahold of the coon, and 1 would do a number on them if you let them chew too long,,lol
