To Many Hunts!!!!!!!!

We are talking all over the board about low numbers at the hunts. I just looked and UKC has 1850 hunts left this year, I tried to look at PKC but they average 300 hunts a month! Thats 3600 hunts a year! It doesnt take the smartest guy to figure out why turn out are low. Until something is done about this nothing we do will make any real difference. Weeknight hunts did this.

Is UKC the only registry that has a limit on how many events a club can license per year?

1850 may sound high, but that's only about 38 hunt per state for the rest of the year. I know for my state I can hit maybe 2 a month that are within an hour. The rest I'm driving 3 to 4 hours 1 way.. I'm not driving more than 1 hour one way for a yellow win slip..PKC HUNTS IN MY area are all on weekdays now with maybe 1 a month on a weekend. PKC is drawing more entries because you only hunt 1 hour, always a cast winner, and it pays out instead of that yellow piece of paper.. I hunt both so I'm not picking sides, but if UKC wants numbers back up at a local level turn weekend hunts to $30 entry, have a state and breed race, always have a cast winner, leave it 2 hour hunt time and weekends only, all dogs hunt together 10 cast wins gives you nite champion with 10 more for grand. That's my opinion, but I'm No big shot in the game so it won't be heard

No they are listening and hopefully you will be happy with the stuff they are working on. The 1850 isnt the problem, its them plus all the rest. I remember well before the weeknight hunts. The hunts on the weekend were much larger and were a lot harder to get in the final 4. It made for a better quality hunt, but thats not what everyone is interested in.

I for one am a 90% pleasure hunter and a 10% comp hunter but think about this my 4 closest hunting buddies have not hunted in any comp hunt of any KC in 10 years or better. but they pleasure hunt 2-4 nights a week.

My opinion on the numbers going to the hunts is that the average coonhunter only has so much he can spend each week on his hobby. so if there is a hunt most every night within a 2 hour drive and they chose to go to one on Tuesday & another one on another night they have spent their weekly allowance and then stay home with Moma or the girl friend on the weekends.
Hunters only have so much money to play with , just like any other hobby.--bottom line too many hunts & no one knows how to fix it. because of all the different organizations putting on the events.

I look at it like this...
I can spend $20.00 and hunt 2 hours .
or I can spend $60.00 and hunt 2 hours.
For me it's $20.00 hunts .

I agree,to many hunts causes low numbers which in turn causes the club to have a hard time making it

Obviously all your looking for as a return on your $20 is two hours of hunting and I get that. Unfortunately there are not very many people left that think like that. Most people want something back.

Open up the draw. Track cast wins for state races and raise the entry fee to $30. At least $5 goes to fund the end of the year hunt the rest to cover administrative costs to keep this stuff recorded and published in a timely matter. Might as well call it the WORLD HUNT because with 100 k on the line it will be THE world hunt again.

I think anything less and all you're doing is bailing water out a boat that is sinking.

Re: Re: To

Just don't close my $20.00 lane.
Theirs more competitors that can't chase CW every weekend for a state race etc.
I'm not interested in funding a platform that I personally can't compete in bcuz of priorities.

So have 2 entry lines @ the hunts.
A yellow slip line($20) and a chaseing a CW line($30).

You could keep the $20.00 entry and still have state and or national race. All of clubs don’t give any trophy anyway. $20.00 entry 5 goes into state escrow $2.50 into a national escrow. Just a suggestion

You can spend $20 for a shot at some hand written yellow paper OR
$30 for a shot at some printed green paper with a presidents picture.

My choice for green backs is "Super Slams" not a local nite hunt.

I don't think money is the real issue. I have yet to see one local UKC "money hunt", in my area. I hear people say they would rather compete for money than a win slip, well in UKC you can have both.

The point of the post was no matter what kind of hunt it is there are way to many of them. Then we complain about low turn outs. They have a low turn out because they are way to saturated. Another post says its a dying sport. I disagree, we know that only a fraction of coon hunters comp hunt. That fraction is still enough that they are holding that many hunts and wanting more.

ACHA 1973 world hunt, only had 341 total dogs, and the bred numbers were about the same today % wise. 230 tw, 45 e, 26 bt, 23 b tan, 14 rb, 2 plotts, and 1 ach. Not sure what a ach is.

Some common names in the top 20 Timothy Ball (Harry) joe House (polly) Pride Gann (buck) Ed Bates (kash)

And this year's ACHA WORLD HUNT had less than 80 dogs entered. It would be interesting to see how many hunts a year UKC and PKC had in 2000 vs 2017

When there was only 1 store in our town everyone stopped there. If ya didn't like the prices or people the other option was 17 miles away. They made a fortune for years, but now there's 2 more stores to compete with so there's no more monopoly. Same for the hunts.

There is a comp hunt usually within 1hr 30mins from my house at least 3 to 5 nights a week. It’s all about choosing. You guys say you are having low hunt numbers, but a normal 1hr $$$ hunt through the week draws anywhere between 10 and 30 dogs. A weekend double header usually draws about the same and more. While a 2hr yellow slip hunt in the club down may see 10 dogs total at best. I really don’t think it’s about the $$$ as much as the races that go on.... state, national, youth, age races and so on. I think some people just like the race of it all . I also think that there may be something to “there is always a cast winner” thing as well. It does make it easier to pay the entry if you know that you know your going to get something back if you just win a cast.
