I got a 8 month old pup he will not show any interest in a caged coon im not using a older hound trying to start him alone any suggestions?

Near any dog should bark at a coon in a cage. See if you can get another dog just to show him the coon with and see if this doesn't get him fired up. Some just need a buddy to trip that trigger.

I have read on here 1000X about the dog that was a world beater coondogs but would never pay a coon in a cage any mind, but for me when I am starting something and it won't at least get unglued on a coon in a cage REALLY takes the wind out of my sails. I have a hard time taking a dog hunting that wont make a good effort at running and treeing a coon I let out of the cage.

One of my male dogs has some pups and young dogs from different females that won't bark at a cage coon. I got one young dog back cause the guy said the dog wasn't going to make it because the dog didn't have any interest in a cage coon. 1st turnout the dog ran and treed with the other dogs. Next drop the dog ran and treed, we shot the coon out, and the coon fell by where this young dog was treeing. The young dog took his feet off the tree, smelled the coon about 5 seconds and then raised back up and went to treeing. I'm betting he won't need many coon shot out to him.

I personally don't understand the cage coon deal. It's not like a dog is gonna be running into a bunch of coon on the ground in their life. They aren't going to tree very many coon that they can see up the tree. So what is the point of doing the cage coon stuff?

I hunted a dog for a man , made him a Gr Nt Ch and he would not bark at a cage coon, you could not shove em over 1 in a cage !!!!!!

He may just not be mature enough !!!! Some monkey see monkey do with another dog may work.......... Does he show any interest in a dead one ?????

friend my theory is about the same as rons,put your pup in a pen beside an agressive dog on barking at a coon,put arope on a coon cage or hide and drag it by the pen this most likely will work ok. one thing dont force him on a live coon cage ok.note the best one i had would not bark at a caged coon ok.

It's not a good sign if one wont bark at a caged coon but it's not the end of the world.

My uncle had a dog in the 90's that was a breed winner in the Purina race that wouldn't pay much attention to a caged coon. I have several in my kennel that carry his blood and they don't pay much attention to one either. I have an eight month old pup right now that is coming on strong in the woods running and treeing and she don't like a caged coon much.

i had one not showing any intrest and another u would think his side would explode.started tieing him back gets to watch not get to play finally it clicked..some on here havem treeing on cage coon at 6 weeks having to take a brake and nurse if u like the pup just have patience if u dont start over pups r expected to do alot good luck if that happens

Some training traditions die hard. Used to be people hunted for fur and they also competition hunted. Seems like dogs 20 or 30 years ago had to hate a coon and were more kill dogs. Not barking at a cage coon was not something you saw often. Now, dogs have been bred more for competition. More preserving coon in your hunting spots so more pulling dogs off trees and not giving them coon. So more dogs that don't need coon are being bred and more dogs that are scent driven and not so much kill dogs and dogs that need coon killed to them. I think that is why you see more pups and dogs that aren't going nuts over coon in a cage. Just my theory anyway but a rabbit dog doesn't need rabbit fur or rabbits in a cage to get them going.

Don't mean anything most will bark few won't one of the best I had would not look at one in a cage could care less but let it go and he would smoke it.He died when he was seven made him a grand night very easy and he wouldn't bark at a cage coon when he was seven either so it don't mean he won't make a good dog.

Take your own advice tree grabers! Haha only having fun !time in woods I don't care about cage coon at all if I want to hunt cage coon then I would care take it hunting woods time is all the time it needs!

dont worry about fooling with a coon in a cage, that want make a coon dog out of him, hunt your dog in the woods, thats the only way to make a coon dog.

I have a 9 year old that when younger would just look at a caged coon and would care less unless you let it go. Then look out. My last pup was scared of them until he was 13 months old, now a treeing machine. Kinda like women and cats, you just never know.

Never know w/pups, seen 'em pay no attention at first and be ok. My last pup wouldnt pay any atten. to a coon, until she started running w/other dogs good, opening on her own, not just barking. Then I showed her one and she pounced it, like she had saw a dozen. Theyre all diff. even litter mates sometimes. Hard to read all the posts of 6 mo. pups doin it all, but they are less common than you think.
