Camper

Never owned a camper but looking to buy one,Seeking advice on do,s and donts and size of camper that wont strain a 2015 Silverado Dbl Cab 5.3 engine.Thinking about 20, 26 ft range camper just for me and wife...Will the 5.3 handle a camper in that range.

camper

I have pulled a lot of campers, trailers, & boats. Stopping is very important. Most campers come with brakes on at least one axle and you put a control box in the cab. If the camper starts pushing or swaying, you can hit the box lightly to straighten you up. Check ur trailer brakes often cause they have problems sometimes, pretty often. Drive slow till you get use to pulling. Wind gust & 18 wheelers might make you panic at first, but you will get use to it. I would get the smallest that worked for me. 5.3 should pull a 20 ft camper just fine.

Buy new

Or be very selective in buying used. Campers are like corndogs. One day you love them next day they get on your nerves. We enjoy ours great family fun.

Pulled a 16.5 foot to a bunch of hunts..Its adequate for needs at a coon hunt..ultra lights pull very very nice but eventually come to pieces..Buy a small horse trailer, tag along, customize a bit and you have the most durable trailer on the market that will pull like a dream.

even with electric brakes you can overload the stopping power of a truck easily .

depends on the weight of the camper look at your vehicles max towing rating usually in the glove box and select one based on that. Do not buy a ultra light or any trailer that says that on it as they are junk , buy a jayco or name brand one also if you buy used look under all cabinets and all around for water leaks and mold there are a ton of flood damaged trailers for sale dont buy one you will know if you look hard enough, also buy one that the underside is insulated to protect the floor and pipes from water while driving in wet or freezing conditions, no fiberglass siding it warps and cracks , believe me I know a thing or two about campers i have sold hundreds of them ,get one with a slide best money you can spend on a extra, make sure and most all trailers have brakes on both axles because it is law now but some not too older ones only have it on one axle only , make sure the hitch is a 2 5/16 not 2' that will tell you that the frame work is heavier , look at the shower for cracks or repairs to it look hard , make sure it has gas and electric powered refrigerator so your things will stay cold while driving , make sure it has gas heat the ac units heat is not enough in really cold weather

Chewback, people will pull out in front of you, steep hills and other dumb things. Best to have plenty of stopping power.Pulled a 28 foot cattle trailer for years, it all will happen.

on flat land maybe but not in the hills of SC or here, I worked on a trailer a few weeks ago for a couple that were from Michigan they blew all 4 brakes off there trailer coming down a small mountain here trying to keep from using there truck brakes because they just spent $500 on a brake job , well I bet he uses em both together now because it cost him nearly $800 to fix his trailer brakes , His wife said she about passed out when they lost the trailer brakes because the truck could not stop the 35 ft 5th wheel lucky for them they were right at the bottom
