Parvo

A couple of months ago our house dog had and survived the parvovirus. At the time he spent some time playing in the yard and possibly spread it into the ground. I am about to breed my walker female within the next two months. I plan on putting the mother and pups in a pen with a 1 inch thick cement floor sanitized by clorox. Does anyone have any other tips that can help keep the pups safe until they have had two rounds of parvo vaccines?

Thanks

Anything you keep will need more than 2 rounds of the vaccine. With so many pups in and out here all pups get a shot every 3-4 weeks until they are over 4mo old. The 2 and done does not work.

The first shot destroys the mothers immunity. The second parvo shot builds some immunity. The third shot should get you there.

Thanks for all of the replies! I may try the Neo-par vaccine due to the fact that the last shot I bought from Tractor Supply was ineffective in preventing our house dog from contracting parvo. I have vaccinated many pups before, so I am sure that they were administered correctly except for the first one that was administered by the breeder. PM inbox has been emptied.

Lost a nice whitey pup a couple years ago due to bad vaccine.

I had two litter mates in the same kennel this past summer. Took the male to English days in June and he came home with Parvo. Took him to Iowa State University for 3 days.... brought him home on Tuesday and buried him on Wednesday. Cost=$3200

These two pups were both vaccinated the same day. One vaccination was good, one was bad. There is no guarantee when we vaccinate.

My recommendation is to not have the female or pups on the same "ground".. Parvo stays alive in the soil for months.... It also stays alive in the Whelping nest if it is wooden. Somehow parvo gets into the pours of the wood and can infect a dog months later.

I would move your female to a garage, buddies house, something to be sure her and the pups are clean... but that is me... I actually let a friend raise my last litter up in Minnesota because of the fear that I would loose the litter. I never knew how contagious this disease was until my Iowa State University experience. They made me spray my truck tires with bleach/water every time I entered and left the kennel area. They requested that I quarantine my other hounds for 10-14 days during the incubation period. I also had to spray my shoes when I walked from one hound to the other.. it was a huge pain.... but... I guess it was worth it... We only lost 2 hounds to this and it could have been much worse. The day we discovered out what it was we gave booster shots to every hound on the place.
