Those lines have branched off so many different ways, it's hard to name one specific dominate trait nowdays. But what the heck - I'll try and name what I've seen.

First, the good traits;

1. Generally better than average mouths. Some are outstanding mouths as loud as any in the breed.

2. Generally good hunters. Not always smart hunters-- some straight liners, but these dogs usually don't stand around your feet. They go somewhere, sometimes a long ways.

3. I've seen some wood-monster treedogs. Toes jammed in the bark, eyes rolled back in the head - let-R rip type treedogs. Certainly not all do that, but some.

Now the bad part;

1. Some can be tight on track. Although I've seen an exception or two that was loose as a goose on track. But probably they lean more toward the tight - to honest strike types. (which is good, but doesn't win as many hunts)

2. Some are just ugly SOB's. Big O'le lubberdy (is lubberdy even a word?)... Some are Monkey faced(which prolly came through Jr's mother?), flat footed, and white and dew claws will show up now and then if any of that bothers ya. None of it does me much, especially if it's on a wood-monster I mentioned above...

3. A few of them will push and shove on the wood. They ain't what I'd call mean, but they can dish it out if needed and wont be intimidated easily. Some of the girls can play just as rough as the boys too.

I've hunted and owned a slew of these dogs over the years and I generally like 'um, although I do have grey hair now from hunting them. But they'll be people reading this that have wayyy more knowledge than me if you can get them to speak up about it. Good luck.

PS; I think Lubberdy may only be a word in Barry County Missouri.

Sir,

I agree with Mark..You either love em or hate em..Not much inbetween. Tenacious Jet (TJ),I raised,trained and tried huntin the hair off of him,Theres folks on here that will tell ya ,They asked me to leave him at home so they could hear their hounds,TJ was the LOUDEST hound I ever heard,He give 110% everytime I unsnapped him. Super fast on track and was very accurate. TJ would stay outta trouble on the tree but wouldnt be shoved around either,he would let em know not to be pushy.I hunted pups of all ages with him an he was a gentleman.What would the pedigree look like with yer cross?

I've had a couple here at the house. Sniper is doubled up with Jr as a grand sire and Gem as a grand dam on the female side. I had Trusty here for a bit. Hunted with Pa Jr a good bit. Had two other litter mates to Pa Jr here as pups. Yes, one of them was tight mouth. Sniper can go tight if you have babbling idiots in the cast. Trusty was tight at times when I had him. All had exceptional mouth and track speed. As far as accuracy they seem to have spells. When they are on they are deadly accurate. When they are off if you make a second slick take them home and put them in the kennel. The ones I have had around are not for the faint of heart. Sniper will be ten the end of January and there is no come back in him. Trusty would go deep. Pa Jr and his siblings would go deep. Sniper won't stay with rough dogs but that could be how I raised him. I didn't condone rough at the tree. All the rest were wood monsters. If they got hooked they were staying. I like the line for their intelligence and ease of training....and big mouths.

I take the old goat out now and then to let him stretch his legs. I make sure the coon are moving when I do because he can still wear this old fart out if they're not. He'll have a home here until his last day.
