Carl, No...I've never even considered that.
I guess I lo.0ok at coon hunting and breeding dogs a little different than Mr. Ball. It isn't a business with me, it's a hobby. It is an expensive hobby that I've dedicated a lot of time and a lot of money in. I breed for ME, and not for anyone else. I'm more than willing to share the excess of my breedings, and I'm happy to help someone out who thinks that a dog of mine may match up well with their female.
But if you think about it, I pretty much give my pups away for cost as it is. I'm not getting $1000 a pup. I've used the litter of Skuna River bear pups as an example on here recently. Right now, I have $380.00 a whack in those pups. I will ask $400.00 each for them when they are for sale. If I were to load up in the truck and make a 1000 mile circle to peddle pups...I would simply be paying to make it easier for someone to get a pup from me out of my own pocket. I'm keeping a couple of those pups for myself, so I'll have close to $800 in the pair that I keep...I'm not getting rich doing this.
I have offered fresh chilled semen on any of my stud dogs for no extra charge over the stud fee except the price of shipping to anyone that has issues with travel. I'm paying for the collection, supplies, and have to take time to collect, package, and ship the semen...so I guess I see that as doing my part.
I have driven hundreds of miles to meet folks half-way to breed females, only to have them not show up, and not even have the decency to call to tell me they can't make it, I've taken dogs on trade and never gotten papers on those dogs..... I'm not a rich man, so I don't have the time or the money to promote these dogs in the same manner as Mr. Ball.
And then there is the fact that it seems to be accepted that folks with stud dogs have money. I'm a poor boy that went for a over a year without a job. I simply can't afford to take money out of my pocket to make it "easier" for someone to own one my pups, and I can no longer afford to supplement other coon hunter's hobby.
Don't mean to make this sound harsh at all, but I don't want anyone to think that I am making money doing this. I am offering to make the stud fee on Cube FREE.....by simply having folks pay up the performance fees on the whole litter of pups....that is as far as I can go to helping others out after I pay to ship them semen.....
