What is a TOP Producer?

Reading the suggestions for upcoming CB issues, a poster said they would like to see a list of the top producers of the breed in the breed issues. But,

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER A TOP PRODUCER?

Well it certainly shouldn't be based the number of pups produced. Why is it a stud has to produce at least 100 pups to be on the list? I know of some studs that have a much better percentage of titled dogs, to their credit, than the stud at the top of the UKC list for their breed.

If your talking reproducer there is only one definition in my opionion. That is a hound that has a positive impact to a breed by producing unique traits that a breed is lacking. It sure shouldn't be measured by how many nite ch they produced.

The historical reproducer list is based on the dogs with the most titled pups where the current reproducer list is based on percentages. What about a list of those sires with more than 100 pups by percentage for each breed. It would show those that historical have impacted our breeds that will never make the historical list because they don't have 1000+ pups on the ground but many have much higher percentages of titled pups than the historical list. You could do the same with the females based on all those with 20 or more as the current list is but based on percentage for a historical list. Their historical list is also based on total titled pups instead of percentage like the current reproducer list. It would be nice to see the top historical producers listed by overall percentage and recognize their production ability.

Y'all should include # of titled grandpups for the dogs on the list.

If you are talking females a top reproducer is one that throws outstanding dogs regardless of what she is bred to. IMO a top reproducing female is as scarce as a coondog. A good reproducing female can make any stud dog look good.

The 100 pups makes it harder for a dog to get on the list that just had one good cross made a few times but never really crossed well on anything else.

Y'all should list the names of the offspring produced in addition to the #'s. That way we could decide if a dog was actually a Top Reproducer. In some cases the #'s don't tell the whole story.

.

I was going to respond earlier but Richard covered my thoughts. Just put out the facts about numbers produced. How many litters how many different females bred. Pups names a accomplishment. Then i am sure everyone would write their own story and most would see it different. Also be interesting to see the numbers from dogs in the past compared to todays dogs to see if breeding numbers are shared by more dogs or still a select few.

I'd like to see which dog has the highest percentage of litters with titled pups.

Example:
Dog 1 has 19 litters. 9 of those 19 litters had pups title. 47%
Dog 2 has 17 litters. 9 of those 17 litters had pups title. 53%
Dog 3 has 10 litters. 7 of those 10 litters had pups title. 70%

Bad part is the dog with 10 litters might have more pups on the ground which gives it a better chance of having titled pups. But, it will give some info on which dogs cross on different dogs.
