A first for me

I have raised a ton of dogs over the years, but I have never had one like the one I have now. She started at running at about 7-8 months old and started treeing at 10 months. The thing was she started treeing after season. So she went all the way from March to October without a coon.

I was excited when season came in, and cut her into a corn field at 1:00 am. She quickly treed a coon in the same field her mother treed her first that I harvested to her. Once the gun goes off she quits treeing, and has absolutely no interest in the dead coon. I can't coax her to do any more than a quick sniff. So far I shot 3 coons down to her with the exact same results.

Last night about 2:00 am, I cut her up a dried creek bed along side of a woods that is a complete mess. There are trees, tree branches laying every where. The under growth is thick. She went up over the creek bank into the woods, and did a good job trailing. She was about 800 yards away when she located and rolled it over into a beautiful chop. She was standing against a huge Swamp Oak. I usually have a hard time finding the coon in those trees even when they have no leaves, but not this time. There at the top sat an extra large coon. I thought about shooting it to reward her, but then I remembered who I was hunting. She just doesn't seem to need a coon. So I leashed her up and told her in a hole. About 50 yards later, I bent down to let her know she was a good girl. Go figure.

My buddy had one that when the coon hit the ground he would go over and look at it and then go get back on the tree and start treeing again.

Carson Jones’s

He has one that won’t even tree if you bring a gun. Shot one out to it, then from that point on only treed possums. Man his hounds are ugly!!!

Deercop,

Negative on gun shy. In 4 decades, I have only seen one gun shy. His owner used a bb gun on him.

I once had one that was starting to get shy when I was shooting out coons with a revolver...too loud. Change to a rifle with .22 shorts and fixed the problem.

Larry it could be worse. We've got one now little over a year old. Was coming along nicely had treed a few coons so we dropped one out to her. Wasn't scared of the gun or the coon. Everything went as it should. She hasn't treed one since. Won't even chase one.

Yup....go figure.

I've got two females here that are half sisters. Once the coon hits the ground and it is dead, they are done and just walk off. They will both fight a live coon but have absolutely no interest in a dead coon. Their Sire and also his brother threw pups that wouldn't pay any attention to a caged coon either. Some dogs just don't need coon and would just as soon have a pat on the head which is just fine with me because we don't have a great coon population to begin with.

My Hooker female was the same way Larry.
She was running & treeing coons for about 3 months before coon season opened. Opening nite we shot one out to her she was scared of the gun shot & the coon, she was 4 or 5 years old before she'd grab a coon.

Autumn that's different if the dog is scared of the coon or the gun. I know mine is not the least bit scared of either one. She grabbed it and shook it just like she was
supposed to. Next time out she decided she didn't wanna even chase them anymore. I've never seen one react this way before to having a coon shot out. But I wish I hadn't of done it now lol.

Wasn’t really referring to yours Donnie, I would not expect that reaction though from a dog that wasn’t scared. Hooker never stopped treeing coons even though it scared her when one was shot out.

With the price and ability to sell coon currently it seems this dog came around at about the perfect time in history for you.
