Question

End of hunt, 2 dogs are treed, tree is scored and they are led off tree. The other 2 dogs are struck in but not opening. There are only 7 minutes left in hunt so the 8 can't get them. Do you still start the 8 and hold the 2 dogs on the lead or can you recut them? This actually happened on a hunt Fri night.

Question

I will take a stab at it, looked in rule book and I would say start even tho only have 7 minutes left if dog opens then dogs handled should be turned loose. I did not see anywhere in the rules that said handlers option. If I had one of dogs handled and was not leading , could possibly score on a coon and take lead. Just my opinion.

8 can't get them but they have to open before handled dogs can be cut loose.

Mr. Lambert

It is my belief that rule 11B at the very bottom (last sentence) addresses your question. And my interpretation of that statement indicates I WOULD give those handlers the option to either turn loose or stay on the strap.

I say this because Dogs C&D were both struck and working a track at the time dogs A&B were struck and treed. The judge accepted the strike call, therefore I assume all folks heard those two dogs open on track. The fact that they were not opening when the cast pulled the two scored dogs off the tree has no relevance to me (on the option to turn loose) as they both had already been heard tracking. Dogs C&D were not treed yet, thus competing for tree points, therefore I say let those handlers have that option to recast or hold on to their dogs until the hunt time expires. It's their call at that point (in my humble opinion) of course.

They CAN'T turn loose until the dogs struck in are heard opening. 11(b) " Upon being scored, dog(s) must be turned loose with other dogs that are opening to compete for next available strike points." Key word is "opening". To turn loose without hearing any struck dog(s) "opening" is an implied scratch.

Don't competition hunt much but if I understand this leash lock rule correctly, it has to be the worst rule out there I understand that if dogs are already struck I would be competing for what ever position was open, but to tell me I have to hold my dog on the leash while other dogs are out there looking for a coon just doesn't make sense.
