Black Gold dog food

i see a lot of dog food threads on here, some problematic and some looking for something better.... i have to say i'm pretty happy with my dog food- black gold performance blend 26/18. my dogs weren't as hot as others when hunting in the heat of the summer, they maintain weight well, coats are shiny, ect. but i was curious about some of the other blends black gold offers... specifically the corn free and grain free blends. does anyone feed those? its not readily available at any of my local feed stores or i would just buy it and try it out.... but i may could pay up front and have them add a bag or two to their regular shipment to one of the stores... if it was worth it.

thanks in advance

I feed the same Performance Blend 26-18 and my dogs look great and do not overheat out here in West Texas. Unless a dog has allergies, I see no need to worry about spending extra money for a special feed. To be honest, if a dog has allergies, I am most likely not going to feed him/her very long and sure don't want to breed that problem.
Adios,
Gary

i tell you, i noticed a huge difference in my dogs ability to handle the heat versus dogs on different feed during hunting.... they were really hot, where as my dog was barely panting. (talking dogs in similar shape as well)

Black gold

I used to feed Blackgold (for about 8 years), it used to be a dark brown, oiliy and actually smelled good. Then one year to the next it changed and wasn't oiliy anymore, lighter in color and smelled old. They say they didn't change anything, but just can't believe everything you hear. I have tried it a couple times but I will stick to Purina

Purina Pro Plan Sport is all I will feed. I have tried many of the feeds that are suppose to be as good and haven't found any to be as good.

I have used the black gold 26/18 black bag for 2 years now. I think the dogs do very well on it and they seem to like it very well. It is my "base" feed. I mix some pride (usually orange or green bags) at varying ratios with it. The main reason I do that is because the feed store is inconsistent on what brand/quantities they have in stock. The dogs transition better to a straight feed from the mix. So if I had a good feed store close, I wouldn't fool with the mixing thing.

The blue bag (24/20 maybe) was ok. The yellow bag (not sure the numbers) wasn't something I'd consider again. The dogs didn't like it and they got poor looking on it. For us, the black bag of black gold is best.

I know they have change the bag. Has the formula changed? I have fed the BG in the black bag for the past 15 yrs.

one guy at the feedstore says the formula has changed and gotten "cheaper" due to the fact theyre branching out to walmart and tractor supply but the other says it has not changed ingredients, only changed the bag... not sure, but i would like to know a definite answer

Mike, sounds like you got an old patch of dog food. The 26-18 that I am feeding still looks like you described, dark and pretty oily. The hair coats on my dogs could not be better.
Adios,
Gary
